Extravagant inventions : the princely furniture of the Roentgens by Wolfram Koeppe( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the second half of the 18th century, the German workshop of Abraham and David Roentgen was among Europe's most successful cabinetmaking enterprises. The Roentgens' pieces combined innovative designs with intriguing mechanical devices that revolutionized traditional types of European furniture. An important key to their success was the pairing of the skilled craftsman Abraham with his brashly entrepreneurial son David, whose clients included Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette of France as well as Catherine the Great of Russia. This landmark publication is the first comprehensive survey, in nearly four decades, of the firm from its founding in about 1742 to its closing in the late 1790s. The Roentgen workshop perfected the practice of adapting prefabricated elements according to the specifications of the customers. Detailed discussions of these extraordinary pieces are complemented by illustrations showing them in their contemporary interiors, design drawings, portraits, and previously unpublished historical documents from the Roentgen estate. This fascinating book provides an essential contribution to the study of European furniture."--Publisher's website
Paris 1650-1900 : decorative arts in the Rijksmuseum by Reinier Baarsen( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From 1650 to 1900 Paris was the undisputed center of fashion and taste in Europe. Home to a unique concentration of artists, designers, patrons, critics, and a keen buying public, Paris was the city where trends were made and where novel types of objects, devised for new ways of life, were invented. This book traces the wonderful story of Parisian decorative arts from the reign of Louis XIV to the triumph of art nouveau, through a selection of 150 breathtaking, and often little-known, masterpieces from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It features an exhilarating mixture of furniture, gilt bronze, tapestries, silver, watches, snuff-boxes, jewellery, Sèvres porcelain, and other ceramics, as well as some design drawings and engravings. Specially taken photographs reveal the daring design and beautiful execution of the work of some of the greatest artists and craftsmen of their time. Reinier Baarsen discusses the history and significance of each object, presenting the findings of much new research

In the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Europe experienced a period of unprecedented cultural vitality. Artistic ideas and techniques were widely shared, on paper -- supported by the invention of printing -- and in person, thanks to ever-growing mobility. At first, the church dominated the life of medieval people and much of the art was religious. In the fifteenth century, mounting interest in classical antiquity and the discovery of distant continents sparked new cultural impulses. With the Renaissance came different ideas about mankind, society and belief -- first in Italy and then in the rest of Europe. The ordinary citizen became more independent and more prosperous, and increasingly commissioned works of art, particularly portraits. Artists grew more self-assured and developed their own style and image. Many aspects of this effervescent European art scene come under the spotlight in this book. At its heart are more than a hundred highlights from the Rijksmuseum's collection: pieces made between 1100 and 1600 in the most important cultural centres of the period. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into a lesser-known area of the Rijksmuseum's collections and a valuable, wide-ranging overview of five centuries of flourishing culture in Europe--Publisher's summary
