Reconstructs the extraordinary events that led to the deaths of Burke and Wills in 1861. They were the first white men to cross Australia overland from Melbourne, in the south, to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north. Neither had any experience of exploration, nor did they know much about the outback. Their deaths in the desert, from starvation and exhaustion, were due to incompetence on the part of the authorities, and indolence and fatal inefficiency on the part of the explorers
