The Pleznik family arrives in the U.S. from Hungary. They encounter a disaffected fellow Hungarian, Sokol, who ominously warns them about trusting the American government. The father, Peter, dismisses him since he is already a staunch believer in the U.S. He becomes fast friends with their neighbor, Dan, who gets him a job as a janitor at the Federal Building. Peter learns from Judge Gresham about the process of becoming a citizen. Five years later, he passes the citizenship test. Their son, Eric, caught up in World War I fever, joins the army. Mama Pleznik bakes a cake for Judge Gresham, but Sokol replaces it with a bomb. Peter is imprisoned for trying to kill the Judge. Eric is killed in the war.
