Light! : the industrial age 1750-1900 : art & science, technology & society by Andreas Blühm( Book )

18 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 559 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Of all the revolutionary changes brought about by the Industrial Age, perhaps the most extraordinary and far-reaching was the transformation of light. Scientists described its hidden laws to the public for the first time. Artists found radical ways of depicting it. Inventors found new ways of making it. The lives of ordinary people changed forever as streets, shops, theaters, and their own homes were brilliantly illuminated, first by gas, and then, even more dazzlingly, by electricity." "This book describes the inventions still with us, like electric light, the microscope and photography, as well as arcane reminders of a vanished world, such as the heliostat, the lithophane and the magic lantern. It portrays a revolution in the arts: Constable inventing daylight, Caspar David Friedrich discovering twilight, the impressionists conjuring up sunlight. And it debates the changing symbolism of light."--Jacket

Fierce friends : artists and animals, 1750-1900 by Louise Lippincott( Book )

9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fierce Friends: Artists and Animals, 1750-1900 examines a critical period in our evolving relationship with animals. Between the mid-eighteenth and the early twentieth centuries, the philosophical legacy of the Enlightenment, the mechanical inventions of the Industrial Revolution, and the intellectual transformation sparked by Charles Darwin undermined many of the traditional roles assigned to animals, and overturned our view of them as physically, mentally - and divinely - separated from humans. This book interweaves the history of science and of art in an account of how humans came to understand and appreciate their shared biological ancestry." "Fierce Friends explores how painters, sculptors, illustrators, and ceramists reflected contemporary changes in the perception of animals, incorporating in their work the latest developments in geographical exploration and comparative anatomy, advances in geology and the birth of paleotology, the enthusiasm of amateur naturalists, and the impact of evolution theory. It identifies the importance of illustrators such as Audubon, who were frequently at the forefront of natural history discoveries, and reveals the visionary artists who drew imaginatively on Darwin's theory of natural selection to create mythical beasts. Artists as diverse as Hogarth, Oudry, Gericault, Delacroix, and Van Gogh here demonstrate mankind's increasing awareness of animals as sentient creatures, infusing genres such as animalier painting and portraiture with new meaning and emotional power."--Jacket

8 editions published in 2008 in German and English and held by 172 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cologne's oldest museum, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud - also referred to simply as "the Wallraf" - is one of the largest classic galleries in Germany, and it possesses the most important collection of Western art from the Middle Ages up to the early twentieth century in western Germany. Indeed, its collection of Impressionist painting is the largest in all of Germany - not lastly due to the works contained in the Fondation Corboud, which were bequeathed to the Wallraf by the Swiss collector Gerard J. Corboud." "For the first time, the unique treasures of Impressionism that belong to the Wallraf's store of paintings have been assembled in an illustrated volume. Prominence has been given to works by Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and many more of the great masters."--book jacket

Alexandre Cabanel : the tradition of beauty by Andreas Blühm( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the foremost artists of 19th century France, Alexandre Cabanel (1823 - 1889), will be featured in his first exhibition at the Wallraf in Spring 2011. In cooperation with Musée Fabre in Montpellier, the Wallraf in Cologne will present over 60 works by a man who rose from the rank of a lowly carpenter's son to become court painter to Napoleon III. In order to give these graceful works by the last of the great salon painters just the right ambience, the Wallraf has secured the services of a distinguished compatriot of Cabanel: Star designer Christian Lacroix has been commissioned to design a special interior exclusively for the exhibition. Lacroix studied at the Academy of Arts in Montpellier the hometown of Cabanel and regards the painter as one of his all-time favourites.

9 editions published between 1987 and 1988 in German and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

7 editions published in 2011 in German and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
