The Arab world competitiveness report 2002-2003( Book )

5 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In recent years, the delicate political climate in the Middle East has often overshadowed critical discussions related to economic and social development in the Arab world. The region's economic fragility has intensified due to the economic backlash following the September 11th attacks. This report focuses on the challenges of improving the region's competitiveness at a particularly critical time. It highlights the enormous difficulties that the Arab world currently faces, problems that will only worsen unless drastic changes are made in these countries. It reveals why growth in the region has stagnated since the 1980s in spite of some of the highest investment rates in the world. It also examines why, despite its distinct natural resource endowments, the region has failed to capture a greater proportion of international trade and capital flows
International investments in private equity : asset allocation, markets, and industry structure by Peter Cornelius( Book )

14 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How can private equity investors exploit investment opportunities in foreign markets? Peter Cornelius uses a proprietary database to investigate and describe private equity markets worldwide, revealing their levels of integration, their risks, and the ways that investors can mitigate those risks. In three major sections that concentrate on the risk and return profile of private equity, the growth dynamics of discrete markets and geographies, and opportunities for private equity investments, he offers hard-to-find analyses that fill knowledge gaps about foreign markets. Observing that despite the progressive dismantling of barriers investors are still home-biased, he demonstrates that a methodical approach to understanding foreign private equity markets can take advantage of the macroeconomic and structural factors that drive supply and demand dynamics in individual markets. Foreword by Josh Lerner Teaches readers how to investigate and analyze foreign private equity markets Forecasts private equity investment opportunities via macroeconomic and structural factors in individual markets Draws on data from a proprietary database covering 250 buyout and VC funds and 7,000 portfolio companies
Ukraine : accelerating the transition to market : proceedings of an IMF/Workd Bank seminar by World Bank( Book )

11 editions published in 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers contained in this volume represent the personal views of the authors -- as written in June 1996 -- and reflect the situation at the time of the seminar. Inevitably, some of the data underlying the analyses have changed since then, and the policies that Ukraine will implement in the context of this medium-term strategy will surely differ in some respects from those present here. Nonetheless, we believe that the central messages of these papers are as timely and relevant as ever, and that this book will contribute to an improved understanding of the economic problems facing Ukraine and the way forward toward a successful market economy

Monetary policy and the price behavior in emerging stock markets by Peter Cornelius( Book )

7 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper examines whether the six largest and most active emerging stock markets are informationally efficient with respect to changes in the money supply. To investigate if stock prices fully reflect the information contained in money suppply changes, two different econometric techniques are employed. First, direct Granger-causality tests are used, which focus on the short-run relationship between stock prices and money. Second, the long-run behavior of the two variables is studied by means of co-integration tests. The results suggest that at least for two markets profitable trading rules can be developed to earn consistently higher-than-normal rates of return
Monetary indexation and revenues from money creation : the case of Iceland by Peter Cornelius( Book )

4 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper discusses the effects of monetary indexation on the revenues from monetization in Iceland. The paper starts by showing that monetization revenues fell sharply after indexation was introduced in 1979 and evaluates the different and partly ambiguous factors behind this development. The fiscal consequences are then examined in light of the fact that revenues from monetization have traditionally made up a substantial part of Government revenues in Iceland. Different policy options are simulated using the framework of the public finance approach to inflation. The simulations focus on the relation of fiscal deficits to inflation, output growth, and internal and external debt

By the first half of 1995, the performance .of the economy was more encouraging. Inflation slowed to monthly rates of about 5 percent. Exports to western markets also expanded strongly
