Nonlinear constitutive equations are developed and used to predict from constant stress data the creep behavior of 2618 Aluminum at 200 C (392 F) for tension or torsion stresses under varying stress history including step-up, step-down, and reloading stress changes. The strain in the constitutive equation employed includes the following components: linear elastic, time-independent plastic, nonlinear time-dependent recoverable (viscoelastic), nonlinear time-dependent nonrecoverable (viscous) positive, and nonlinear time-dependent nonrecoverable (viscous) negative. The modified superposition principle, derived from the multiple integral representation, and strain hardening theory were used to represent the recoverable and nonrecoverable components, respectively, of the time-dependent strain in the constitutive equations. Short-time, biaxial creep experiments of an aluminum alloy are described which involved abrupt changes in temperature and state of stress. Results are discussed in terms of a creep surface concept similar to the yield surface concept of time-independent plasticity. Evidence that the creep surface changes size, shape, and location in response to creep strain is discussed. The contribution of metallurgical and viscoelastic effects to the complexity of the mechanical behavior are also discussed. (Author)

An initial yield and seven subsequent yield curves were determined from a sequence of loadings of the same thin-walled tubular specimen of 6061-T6 Al under tension and torsion, including reversed torsion. The yield curves were explored by piercing them very slightly at a number of points. Plastic strain-increment vectors for zigzag loading paths were determined also. Although initial yield curves and most subsequent yield curves resulting from appreciable plastic deformation in simple tension were smooth curves without regions of high local curvature, combined tension and torsion loading in the plastic range tended to develop a corner. Changes in the direction of the stress-increment vector did not produce consistent corresponding large changes in the direction of the plastic strain-increment vector. These observations indicated a blunt corner with a rounded rather than a pointed vertex. Convexity of all yield curves and normality of the plastic strain-increment vectors were verified, or at least not contradicted. (Author)
