Van Gogh's van Goghs : masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam by Richard Kendall( Book )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Van Gogh's Van Goghs presents seventy paintings from the extraordinary collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, home to the single greatest assemblage of the artist's paintings, drawings, and letters. The collection is based on works acquired directly from the artist by his brother Theo, an art dealer and the source of Vincent's financial and emotional support. All periods of Vincent van Gogh's brief but intensely productive career are represented: his earliest paintings in The Netherlands; his responses to French Impressionism in 1886; the images he painted while in hospitals in Arles and Saint-Remy in southern France; and his last, feverishly creative works in Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh's Van Goghs represents a unique opportunity to sample the largest and most varied Van Gogh collection in the world. It accompanies a major exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art."--Jacket

Van Gogh and nature by Richard Kendall( Book )

9 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The celebrated painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) had a lifelong fascination with the natural world. He spent his youth in rural Holland, and the country's flat landscapes, trees, flowers, and birds would feature in his early art. After he moved to Paris, he encountered new radical thinking about art and humans' changing relationship with nature. Later, in Provence and Auvers, he discovered unfamiliar terrain, flora, and fauna that further influenced his artistic ideas and subject matter. Van Gogh's images of such diverse environments reflect not only his immediate surroundings but also the artist's evolving engagement with nature and art. Van Gogh and Nature is an eye-opening new catalogue that chronicles the artist's ongoing relationship with nature throughout his entire career. Among the featured works are Van Gogh's drawings and paintings, along with related materials that illuminate his reading, sources, and influences. Vivid color photography and explanatory texts based on new research by the authors clarify a central theme of Van Gogh's oeuvre."--

Van Gogh : the birth of an artist by Sjraar van Heugten( Book )

10 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1878, at age 25, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) arrived in the area of Belgium known as the Borinage to work as a Protestant evangelist in rural coal mining communities. He failed in that vocation, and after months of soul-searching, in August 1880, he decided to become an artist. This fascinating publication is the first to examine Van Gogh's time in the Borinage and his artistic development in the following years, when he created his first original works. Vivid essays tell the story of Van Gogh's life in the mining towns, and the effect this environment had on his way of thinking and seeing the world. Augmenting the text are excerpts from letters Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo from the Borinage, in which he describes his desire to sketch, and prints that he modeled after masterworks by artists such as Jean-Francois Millet. Other essays trace Van Gogh's development as an artist in subsequent years, including his move to Brussels to fully pursue life as an artist. Thought-provoking examinations of works that Van Gogh completed after leaving the Borinage demonstrate how motifs that he developed there-rustic dwellings, laborers, agriculture, nature-became themes that spanned his entire oeuvre. Van Gogh drawings : influences & innovations by Sjraar van Heugten( Book )

15 editions published in 2015 in French and English and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Vincent van Gogh concentrated on drawing at the beginning of his artistic career. In fact, for the first three years he did little else, convinced as he was that it would give him the foundation he needed to master the art of painting. As a result, his talent as a draughtsman emerged long before he became known as a painter. But drawing remained an important part of his artistic production, and the outstanding mastery demonstrated by his works on paper makes them an equal counterpart to his paintings. The exhibition Van Gogh Drawings: Influences and Innovations looks at the influence of prints and drawings by other artists on Van Gogh's drawings and his small graphic oeuvre. A representative body of his drawings and prints is thus complemented by a selection of images that inspired him at various stages of his career. Van Gogh absorbed a multitude of influences and proceeded to assimilate them in works that are highly innovative, not just in style but often in technique as well. The exhibition and the accompanying catalogue pay close attention to these and other aspects of one of the most remarkable oeuvres of drawings of the 19th century."--Page 4 of cover
