"Connue pour ses positions pacifistes et féministes radicales, l'artiste américaine Nancy Spero (1926-2009), est, dans sa jeunesse, élève de l'Art Institute de Chicago, place forte de la peinture figurative. Puis, elle vient à Paris, de 1949 à 1950, où elle étudie à l'École nationale des beaux-arts. Mariée en 1951 avec le peintre Leon Golub ils auront trois enfants, elle revient vivre avec sa famille dans la capitale française de 1959 à 1964. À son retour aux États-Unis, Nancy Spero s'engage contre la guerre au Viêt Nam et traduit son horreur dans les War Paintings (1966-1970). Suivront les Artaud Paintings (1969-1970) puis la célèbre série des Codex Artaud (1971-1972), avec laquelle elle met en place le principe systématique de bandes de papier, verticales ou horizontales, dans la tradition des papyri égyptiens, des rouleaux chinois et des frises antiques. À partir des années 1970, Nancy Spero met la femme au centre de son travail et représente désormais l'homme au sens large sous une apparence exclusivement féminine. Son travail prend alors une tournure radicalement féministe. Elle forge l'image d'une femme transgressant toute limite d'époque et de culture, libre, forte et intemporelle. Le Centre Pompidou organise, pour la première fois en France, une rétrospective consacrée à l'oeuvre de Nancy Spero en réunissant une soixantaine de dessins de l'artiste américaine, disparue l'année dernière à l'âge de 83 ans."
