Zählen macht Spass: Nachdem es viele Jahre vergriffen war, ist es nun zwanzig Jahre nach seiner Ersterscheinung endlich wieder da, dieses Meisterwerk der inzwischen 81 Jahre alten Autorin, die damals den Hans-Christian-Andersen-Preis dafür erhielt. Allerdings begegnen wir ihm, was die Drucktechniken anbelangt, in veränderter Form. Da gibt es aufklappbare Fenster, ausgestanzte Flächen in Zahlenform, die mit kleinen Tricks das Zählen spielerisch lehren. Eingebettet in diesen Lernprozess ist die Geschichte des Nilpferds, das als Identifikationsfigur für Kinder einen Vogel antrifft, der ihm die Zahlen beibringt. Dieser kleine Piepmatz ist gleichzeitig ein Clown, der sich in groteske Formen zwängen kann, so dass aus seinen Verrenkungen jeweils eine Zahl entsteht. Die Autorin, die ein tiefes Verständnis für die kindliche Begriffswelt besitzt, hat eine Prachtausgabe geschaffen, die alles beinhaltet, was mit Zahlen zu tun hat: Würfelpunkte, Wörter, Symbole, Finger und Menschengruppen, um nur einige zu nennen.
