A transnational poetics by Jahan Ramazani ( )
8 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1,486 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Poetry is often viewed as culturally homogeneous-- 'stubbornly national,' in T.S. Eliot's phrase, or 'the most provincial of the arts,' according to W.H. Auden. But in A Transnational Poetics, Jahan Ramazani uncovers the ocean-straddling energies of the poetic imagination-in modernism and the Harlem Renaissance; in post-World War II North America and the North Atlantic; and in ethnic American, postcolonial, and black British writing. Cross-cultural exchange and influence are, he argues, among the chief engines of poetic development in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries. Reexamining the work of a wide array of poets, from Eliot, Yeats, and Langston Hughes to Elizabeth Bishop, Lorna Goodison, and Agha Shahid Ali, Ramazani reveals the many ways in which modern and contemporary poetry in English overflows national borders and exceeds the scope of national literary paradigms. Through a variety of transnational templates--globalization, migration, travel, genre, influence, modernity, decolonization, and diaspora--he discovers poetic connection and dialogue across nations and even hemispheres. Exceptionally wide-ranging in scope yet rigorously focused on particulars, A Transnational Poetics demonstrates how poetic analysis can foster an aesthetically attuned transnational literary criticism that is at the same time alert to modernity's global condition"--Provided by publisher

Poetry and its others : news, prayer, song, and the dialogue of genres by Jahan Ramazani ( Book )
10 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
What is poetry? Often it is understood as a largely self-enclosed verbal system - 'suspended from any mutual interaction with alien discourse', in the words of Mikhail Bakhtin. But in 'Poetry and Its Others', Jahan Ramazani reveals modern and contemporary poetry's animated dialogue with other genres and discourses. Poetry generates rich new possibilities, he argues, by absorbing and contending with its near verbal relatives
The Norton anthology of modern and contemporary poetry ( Book )
5 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Available separately for the first time, Volume 1, Modern Poetry, is the most comprehensive anthology of modern poetry in English. Beginning with the nineteenth-century precursors, it includes generous, carefully reconsidered selections by the major figures--Yeats, Frost, Stevens, Williams, Pound, H.D., Moore, Eliot, Hughes, Auden, among others. Fourteen new poets give greater voice to women, African American, and Caribbean poets, war poets, and the early experimentalists. The long poem, represented here by the complete texts of Eliot's The Waste Land, Crane's The Bridge, and Moore's An Octopus, receives due attention. The volume concludes with a new Poetics section of influential statements by poets that provide essential context for reading the poems. --W.W. Norton & Co
