As a distinguished Soviet actor and Chief Director of the Leningrad Komosol Theatre, Rolan Bykov was often assigned projects dealing with "children's subjects." In this film, he offers a haunting portrayal of youth and its stinging mimicry of adult transgressions. 12-year-old Lena arrives in a small provincial town and is immediately dubbed "Scarecrow" by her sixth-grade classmates. When Lena's infatuation with the class leader, Dima, impels her to shoulder blame for his act of betrayal, she becomes the class pariah and the victim of concerted "adult" measures of ostracism. In this metaphorical social critique, the children re-enact the archetypal fall from innocence and re-invent strategies of persecution and tyranny. With the aid of her kindly grandfather, a collector of 19th-century paintings, Lena exacts a just revenge and emerges triumphant in the film's ironic denouement initially opposed by the Soviet School Teacher's Union. Scarecrow was the U.S.S.R.'s biggest commercial hit when it was released in 1986
