Im Schweizer Exil, wo er nach der russischen Revolution Zuflucht gesucht hatte, wollte Strawinski ein Musiktheater schreiben, das von einer großen Opernbühne unabhängig war und auch auf einer Wanderbühne aufgeführt werden konnte. So entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schriftsteller Charles F. Ramuz nach einem Märchen aus der russischen Volksdichtung die Geschichte vom Soldaten, der seine Geige (seine Seele) dem Teufel verkauft hat, sie in der Liebe zu einer Prinzessin beinahe wieder findet und doch vom Teufel geholt wird, weil er alles haben will. Das Werk, eines der brillantesten des Komponisten, wird vom Merlin-Ensemble kongenial interpretiert. "Alle Rollen des Stücks - Soldat, Teufel, Prinzessin, Erzähler - werden von der hinreißenden Lore Brunner gesprochen, mit mundartlichen Einfärbungen, in perfekter Abstimmung auf die Musik ... Lore Brunner ... spricht ein Märchen für Erwachsene und verzaubert sie im Verbund mit der Musik zu Kindern"
