Adrenergic mechanisms in myocardial ischemia by Gerd Heusch( Book )

7 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in 3 languages and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stress-induced myocardial ischemia is a frequent manifestation of coronary heart disease, and sympathetic activation is an important precipitating and aggravating factor in such stress induced ischemia. However, the complex interplay between the sympathetic initiation of myocardial ischemia, ischemia-induced alterations in sympathetic neurotransmission, as well as changes in adrenoceptor density and post-receptor signal transduction that can occur during ischemia remains incompletely understood. Not only the activation of myocardial fJ adrenoceptors, but also the activation of coronary IX-adrenoceptors can contribute to myocar dial ischemia. However, the role of fJ-adrenoceptor-mediated increases in contractility relative to heart rate in the initiation of ischemia is not clear, and the significance of IX-adrenoceptor mediated changes in coronary vasomotor tone, as well as the responsible IX-adrenoceptor subtypes are highly controversial. Malignant arrhythmias may be triggered by both IX- and fJ-adrenergic mechanisms. Current research in this field is focussed not only on the underlying physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, but also on clinical treatment strategies, e. g., by fJ-blockade, IX-blockade, bradycardic agents and calcium antagonists. Recent findings were presented and future research directions discussed during the 61" International Titisee Conference, held at the Schwarzwald-Hotel, Titisee, March 29-31, 1990 under the sponsorship of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation. Dr. Hasso Schroeder and Dr. Hermann Frohlich deserve special thanks for their generous support and pleasant organization of the meeting. The publication of the proceedings has been made possible by grants from Astra Chemicals, Bayer, ICI, Dr. Karl Thomae, and Upjohn

Final report on the dynamic response of various media by M Anliker( Book )

3 editions published between 1969 and 1971 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report contains a summary of the research performed under the following topics: (1) a theoretical analysis of waves propagating in a bounded, heterogeneous elastic medium, (2) the transient response of an elastic half-space to a spreading surface load, (3) propagation of stress waves in a homogeneous isotropic wedge, (4) seismic wave radiation from sources moving over a finite distance, (5) the dynamic response of a fluid-filled circular cylindrical shell to pressure waves while subjected to a uniform external pressure, and (6) transmission of sounds and pulse waves in large arteries and veins. Liquid-gas interfaces studied on the basis of the classical surface tension theory and intermolecular force models by Barry Brian Flachsbart( Book )

3 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Liquid-gas interfaces are studied from two viewpoints. The first method uses the classical surface tension model of the interface. The differential equation defining the equilibrium shape of the interface relates the surface tension with the pressure difference across the interface. The boundary conditions for the equation assume that the contact angles (the angles the liquid forms with the container waalls) are constant and independent of the body forces. An iterative method for finding the equilibrium shape is developed, for the case of small body forces. The method is used in two cases and compared with results of other methods. The stability of the interface is investigated for a two-dimensional layer spread over a segment of a rigid cylinder with rigid radial walls. The eigenfunctions of the vibrations of layers of nonuniform depth are expanded in terms of the eigenfunctions for the layers of uniform depth. Approximations are made by truncating the series. The coefficients are obtained by minimizing the mean square error along the interface. The results are given in the form of a relationship between a dimensionless stability parameter and the angle between the radial walls for the case of limiting stability. A comparison of the approximate results with known solutions shows good agreement

Dynamic behavior of eye globes by Robert Howard Tuffias( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The eye globe was treated as a spherical shell (combined cornea and sclera) filled with (vitreous and aqueous) and surrounded by (tissue and fat) incompressible, inviscid, irrotationally flowing fluids. Its dynamic behavior was investigated by making use of the Flugge shell equations and the appropriate inertia terms. The axisymmetric case was solved in closed form, and the asymmetric case was solved numerically. Some qualitative results for physiologically meaningful parameter values are given. Static and dynamic experiments were performed on enucleated dog eyes. The static experiment measured the change in volume of the eyes as a function of time at various pressures. The results of this experiment indicated that the eyes were viscoelastic with an associated time constant of approximately 20 minutes. (Author)
