"The Chinati Foundation is widely considered one of the world's most important destinations for experiencing large-scale contemporary art. It was founded by Donald Judd (1928-1994), whose specific ambition was to present and preserve a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape. Chinati is located on 340 acres of desert on the site of former Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas. Renovation and installation at the site began in 1979 with help from the Dia Art Foundation, and it was opened to the public in 1986. This handsome publication is the first comprehensive presentation of the Chinati Foundation's collection. The book describes hos Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati (and including its two predecessors--his building in New York and his residence in Marfa). The individual installations at Chinati are presented in chronological order with stunning photography; these include works by Carl Andre, Ingólfur Arnarsson, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, David Rabinowitch, and John Wesley, as well as by Judd himself. His installations at Marfa include 15 outdoor works in concrete and 100 aluminum pieces housed in two carefully renovated artillery sheds. The book also features writings by Judd relating to Chinati and Marfa, and a complete catalogue of the collection."--Book jacket

An artist and critic, Donald Judd was the embodiment of considerable duality - at once a man of intellectual rigor and a multidisciplinary conceptualist who deftly moved toward a new minimalism. In 1971, he relocated from New York to the prairies of Presidio County in southern Texas, 20 miles from the Mexican border. It is here, in Marfa, Texas, that Chris Felver interviews Judd, providing insights into his process, his materials - aluminum, brass, Plexiglas, and concrete - and the freedom he sought to achieve from institutions trying to define what art is. A rare visit with an exceptional talent and a compelling destination for art aficionados

One of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Donald Judd (1928-1994) pioneered the use of industrial materials and fabrication in serial forms to redefine the relationships between artist, art object, viewer, and space, and usher in the minimalist style. Focusing entirely on Judd's multicoloured works, this work features essays by leading scholars that illuminate this body of work and examine its relationship to his oeuvre as a whole

"Beginning as a critic and painter, Donald Judd moved into three dimensions in the early 1960s, with box-like structures arranged on the gallery floor or mounted on the wall. Initially constructed by hand, his sculptures were later industrially manufactured in such materials as galvanised iron, steel, Plexiglas and plywood. His use of brightly hued lacquers, vibrant colours and polished metals ran counter to the public's understanding of what 'minimalist' sculpture should look like." "The authors explore the conflicts between previous critical interpretations of Judd and his own philosophical, political and moral understanding of his work. They also examine the importance of colour and new man-made materials in Judd's work. The inclusion of a section on Judd's own permanent installations at the remote town of Marfa, Texas, a full chronology and a major essay by the artist on his own use of colour, completes a comprehensive survey of this compelling artist."--Jacket

"Donald Judd was one of the leading artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His "specific objects"--Which he refused to call sculpture - represent a radical and revolutionary use of space, scale, and materials. By contrast, the primary concern in his many drafts and designs for architecture and furniture is utility, although the formal relationship to his artistic objects is plain." "All facets of Judd's work converge in Marfa, West Texas, where he systematically turned an abandoned fort into one of the world's major ensembles of contemporary art. This book uses drawings, plans, and photographs of Marfa to illustrate Judd's radical approach to architecture and design, and to demonstrate the meticulous attention he paid to the settings for his installations. Photographs of Judd's aluminum and wooden furniture series and examples of his plywood tables, chairs, and shelves display his stringent application of aesthetic brevity and precision in form and material." "First published in German in 1991, this revised and expanded edition contains additional illustrations and several essays that have not previously appeared in English. Donald Judd's original contribution, an anti-war essay written during the 1991 Gulf War, is complemented by a second essay on the relationship between art and architecture."--Jacket
