In 'Master Olof' - which Strindberg would revise many times over the years - we witness Persson's series of rebellions, first against the established Church, then against the king, Gustav, with whom he had previously sided, and finally, against the expectations of heroic martyrdom, a fate he eschews in favour of living on to spread the word of Lutheranism. This translation was first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in January 1986
