Set during the reign of Louis XI. Clopin bought Esmeralda from the gypsies when she was young. Dancing in the square at the festival, Esmeralda is spotted by Jehan, the evil brother of the good archdeacon. When he sets Quasimodo out to kidnap Esmeralda, Phoebus, Captain of the Guards, rescues her and captures Quasimodo. The courts sentence Quasimodo to a flogging, and the only one who will give him water while he is tied in the square is Esmeralda. Quasimodo falls in love with her. After Clopin forces Esmeralda to leave Phoebus at the ball, she sends a note to Phoebus to meet her at Notre Dame. In the garden, Phoebus is stabbed in the back by Jehan. Esmeralda is accused of stabbing Phoebus, convicted by the courts and sentenced to hang. When Esmeralda again rejects Jehan, he tells her that Phoebus is dead, even though it is not true. "He who gets slapped" was the first film ever produced by the M-G-M studios. In this very experimentally artful film, director Seastrom presented esoteric subject matter in highly symbolic scenes. The story involves a circus performer known simply as "He," who is soundly disgraced by his wife and her lover, The Baron. He is the paradox of the circus clown who is always performing in the show to make others laugh, while away from the crowd he is unhappy, still suffering from the slaps of life's reality. In "The unholy three, " two sideshow performers commit robberies by masquerading as an elderly lady and a small child. The film was so popular with audiences that Chaney appeared in a talking version of the movie in 1930. "The unknown" features Chaney playing an armless knife thrower in a circus, using his bogus deformity as a ruse to hide from the police. He is deeply in love with the circus owner's daughter, who coincidentally has a phobia of having men's arms around her. Chaney's performance with his feet (even lighting his own cigarettes with them) and his attempt to become "authentic" in order to permanently seal his relationship with the girl both contribute to making this the strangest love story ever recorded on film

In "Nomads of the North" (1920, 77 min.), three men vie for the love of beautiful Nanette Roland while the majestic north woods become the site for murder, a manhunt, and a raging forest fire. Chaney plays Nanette's true love, Raoul Challoner, who arrives to stop her forced marriage. An accidental death sends the couple fleeing to the north, where lawman Corporal O'Connor (Lewis Stone) doggedly pursues them--and the mayhem begins. Then, Chaney portrays dope-peddling, safecracking, handicapped hoodlum Wilse Dilling in "The Shock" (1923, 89 min.), a gripping gangster yarn. Dragging himself from the darkness of Chinatown to the redemptive sunlight of the countryside, Dilling turns away from his life of crime but finds himself pulled back when the father of the woman he loves is blackmailed. Drawn into a whirlpool of vice and intrigue, Dilling fights to retain his humanity as the film careens to a spectacular, earth-shaking climax

One of the first great novels of the Romantic era, Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame has thrilled generations of readers with its powerfully melodramatic story of Quasimodo, the deformed hunchback who lives in the bell tower of medieval Paris's most famous cathedral. Feared and hated by all, Quasimodo is looked after by Dom Claude Frollo, a stern, cold priest who ignores the poor hunchback in the face of his frequent public torture. But someone steps forward to help--the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, whose single act of kindness fills Quasimodo with love. Can the hunchback save the lovely gypsy from Frollo's evil plan, or will they all perish in the shadows of Notre Dame? An epic tale of beauty and sadness, The Hunchback of Notre Dame portrays the sufferings of humanity with compassion and power. --Publisher
