El Lissitzky : beyond the Abstract cabinet : photography, design, collaboration by Margarita Tupitsyn( Book )

17 editions published in 1999 in English and Portuguese and held by 594 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lazar Markovich Lissitzky is widely known as a Russian avant-garde artist who made significant contributions to abstract art in the 1920s. Until now his experiments with photography, photomontage, and graphic and exhibition designs in the 1920s and throughout the 1930s have not been documented and thoroughly analyzed. This book explores both the political and aesthetic aspects of Lissitzky’s late multimedia work from his designs for the Abstract Cabinet to his death in 1941.The author and the two contributors give special attention to Lissitzky’s intense collaboration first with German and then with Soviet photographers, designers, and filmmakers, and they discuss how his various personal friendships and acquaintances influenced the directions he took in photography and design. The book presents photographic works by Lissitzky and these other artists as well as some of Lissitzky’s early non-objective art that foreshadows his experiments in figurative art. It also includes Lissitzky’s correspondence with his Western colleagues and his wife Sophie Kueppers
Gustave Caillebotte : an impressionist and photography by Karin Sagner( Book )

14 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The paintings of Gustave Caillebotte depict striking Parisian street scenes, from Boulevard Haussmann and The Bridge of Europe looking out onto the Gare Saint-Lazare to Caillebotte's best-known work, Paris Street, Rainy Day, which hangs in Chicago's Art Institute today. Caillebotte has long been acknowledged as an important painter--and munificent patron--of the French impressionist movement. Yet his paintings, in their near-photographic precision, stand apart from the works of Renoir and Monet in important ways. Gustave Caillebotte: An Impressionist and Photography sets out to explore the development of the artist's distinctive style. Though there is no evidence that Caillebotte practiced photography, he took an early interest in the art form, influenced perhaps by his brother, the photographer Martial Caillebotte. As a result, Gustave Caillebotte's paintings show an emphasis on realism and often take on the composition and perspective of a photograph as well, with figures toward the center in sharp focus, while those in the foreground or background remain indistinct. Karin Sagner and Max Hollein have carefully chosen from among Caillebotte's works a selection of paintings that exemplify this characteristic of the artist's style. They are presented here alongside critical essays and works by photographers who were Caillebotte's contemporaries and shared an affinity for documenting the nineteenth-century French capital, including André Kertész, Wols and László Moholy-Nagy, Édouard Baldus, Charles Marville, and Eugène Atget. While there have been many studies of Caillebotte's work, this is the first book to publish his paintings side-by-side with a selection of early photographs taken between 1850 and 1930. Together, they establish Caillebotte as the pioneer of a radically modern photographic form that added a new dimension to French impressionism and exerted an important influence on later photography."--Books.google

Roger Ballen : photographs 1969-2009 by Roger Ballen( Book )

8 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For more than 30 years now, the photographer Roger Ballen has been shooting portraits of the impoverished white population of rural South Africa, of day labourers, security guards and workers who eek out a wretched existence in the so-called Platteland. Ballen portrays his subjects against the theatrical backdrop of their own humble homes, whose Spartan interiors he transforms into claustrophobic stage sets on which the actors play their parts with extraordinary expressiveness. The selected props include wire and dilapidated furniture, which shot in conjunction with the subjects themselves develop a surrealistic life of their own. There is something almost absurdly grotesque about these documentary-style compositions and at the same time something worryingly oppressive. They show a hermetically sealed world that can be read as a deeply troubling image of psychotic energy.--[Résumé de l'éditeur]
