The basis of this theory is a psychological model called exemplar-based learning, in which examples are stored strictly as points in E [to the n]. This thesis describes some advantages and disadvantages of NGE theory, positions it as a form of exemplar-based learning, and compares it to other inductive learning theories. An implementation has been tested on several different domains, four of which are presented in this thesis: predicting the recurrence of breast cancer, classifying iris flowers, predicting survival times for heart attack patients, and a discrete event simulation of a prediction task. The results in these domains are at least as good as, and in some cases significantly better than other learning algorithms applied to the same data

Abstract: "Models of dynamic control tasks are often inaccurate. Their accuracy can be improved through re-calibration, which requires an enormous amount of data. An alternative approach improves a model by learning from a set of training trials. Researchers studying dynamic control tasks have recently begun to apply nearest neighbor algorithms to improve their models. These methods have met with some degree of success. For example, published demonstrations have shown how they can be used to juggle tennis balls, bat a ball into a bucket, and balance a pole on a moving cart. However, these demonstrations do not address how small changes in the learning algorithm can dramatically alter an algorithm's performance on dynamic control tasks. We describe a number of different algorithm designs, and apply them to the problem of teaching a robot how to catch a baseball, a nontrivial dynamic control task. We empirically investigate four hypotheses concerning design decisions that should be addressed when applying these algorithms to dynamic control tasks. Our results highlight their strengths and limitations for these types of tasks."

A commonly-used technique for fault-tolerant computing is to perform n redundant computations and then vote on the results, choosing on the majority value if one exists. We present an algorithm for carrying out the voting which uses (3n/2) -2 comparisons, and we prove the algorithms optimal. This solves Problem 81-5 posed in the Journal of Algorithms, June 1981. Some of the methods considered in these experiments have superior data compression abilities, but other methods are slightly more accurate classifiers. When the data contain irrelevant features, though, these latter methods perform very porly. These results point to a hybrid method as the best solution. Finally, the experiments here highlight some important new problems for future geometric learning research."

Abstract: "A new machine learning technique is presented for predicting protein secondary structure, a task that is an essential step towards understanding protein folding. The technique involves storing large numbers of points in a multi-dimensional space, and using an extensively modified nearest neighbor method to make predictions. The learning program was trained on a set of 101 proteins of known structure, and tested on a separate set of 28 additional proteins. The maximum overall predictive accuracy was 67.9%, which surpasses recent tests using neural nets, as well as other, more traditional methods. We further observed that some sequences of residues were considerably easier to classify than others."

In this paper, we consider the problem of testing orthogonal shapes; e.g., unions of axis-parallel rectangles in 2-D, 3-D, and higher dimensions. We show that several different classes of orthogonal shapes can be tested with a linear number of test points. This work is a first step towards developing efficient testing algorithms for objects with more general shapes, including those with non-orthogonal and curved surfaces."
