Romantic drama filmed on location in Bali. Photographed in 1933 and released in 1935, this film and Henry de la Falaise's Kliou, the killer (also on this DVD) were the last two feature films produced in two-color, red and green Technicolor. In addition to scenes of Balinese daily life, this film depicts a temple festival featuring the calonarang, or cosmic struggle between the evil witch Rangda and the mythical Barong, a protective being. The djanger and legong dances also appear, as do scenes from a cremation ceremony
