He is widely acclaimed as a naturalist and conservationist, being made Australian of the Year in 1979 and Citizen of the Year for Western Australia in 1980. After training as a teacher at Claremont Teachers' College, Mr Butler began work as a naturalist in 1963 as an associate of the Western Australian Museum, and an environmental consultant. Authored and presented the ABC television series "In the Wild" which began in 1976. This interview covers only a short period of Mr Butler's varied life - the five years of his apprenticeship fitting and turning at East Perth Power Station in 1946. He was one of four in that first postware intake of apprentices and started at the Power Station before the State Electricity Commision (SEC) took over responsibility from the WA Government Railways. Although being a tradesman wha Outlines his Associateship in Mechanical Engineering at Perth Technical School and his apprenticeship with Midland Railway Workshops and Western Australian Government Electricity Supply Tramway Trolley Buses and Ferries.
