Gustav Klimt : painting, design and modern life by Gustav Klimt( Book )

17 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 406 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) remains one of the most popular artists of the early 20th century. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Tate Liverpool, a highlight of that city's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations and the first such show in the UK, Gustav Klimt explores the life and work of an intriguing figure at the heart of the cultural transformation of Vienna around 1900." "Central to the book is the first thorough examination of the relationship between Klimt's paintings and the work of his close friend the architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Reaching beyond the two-dimensional arts, it hails the advent of an all-inclusive design culture that embraced interiors, furniture, clothing and jewellery. Essays by leading scholars and curators consider key works, events and developments: the founding of the Viennese Secession, the inaugural display of the Beethoven Frieze, and a series of collaborative ventures in the creation of total domestic environments for the pursuit of 'modern life', among them the Villa Waerndorfer in Vienna and the Villa Primavesi in rural northern Moravia. In addition, Klimt is assessed as both an accomplished erotic draughtsman and a seductive landscape painter."--Jacket
Egon Schiele : the Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky collections by Egon Schiele( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele's death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements." "This publication accompanies the exhibition Egon Schiele: The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections, which presents paintings and drawings from the collections of the co-founders of Neue Galerie New York. Together, these collections comprise the finest gathering of works by Schiele in the United States." "Essays examine the artist's reception history in American and Austria, the censorship of his art during and after his lifetime, and the lost Schiele collections. This publication also traces, for the first time, Schiele's enormous influence on contemporary culture."--Jacket

Nude men : from 1800 to the present day by Nude men( Book )

11 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This exploration includes glimpses into the life-drawing classes of European art academies, representations of men during the time of the French Revolution, "Sturm und Drang" and late Impressionism. It also offers examples of 20th century art. Egon Schiele and Richard Gerstl are the key representatives of radical self-observation in the mirror of the naked self. However, this volume also presents artists such as Jean Cocteau, Antonio Canova, Johann Heinrich Füssli, David Hockney, Ferdinand Hodler, Edvard Munch, Auguste Rodin, Andy Warhol, Nan Goldin and Louise Bourgeois. It contains a variety of essays that examine concepts such as masculinity and the construction of identity, male desire in modern art and the naked man as a motif in advertising."--Publisher's website
The naked truth : Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka and other scandals by Tobias G Natter( Book )

10 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Klimt and the women of Vienna's golden age 1900-1918 by Tobias G Natter( Book )

This authoritative and generously illustrated book highlights Gustav Klimt's portrayals of women in his work. His sensual portrayals of women are among his most celebrated works and the focus of this book
Gustav Klimt : the complete paintings by Gustav Klimt( Book )

10 editions published between 2012 and 2017 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During his lifetime, Klimt was a controversial star whose works made passions run high; he stood for Modernism but he also embodied tradition. His pictures polarized and divided the art-loving world. Journalists and general public alike were split over the question: For or against Klimt? The present publication therefore places particular emphasis upon the voices of Klimt's contemporaries via a series of essays examining reactions to his work throughout his career. Subjects range from Klimt's portrayal of women to his adoption of landscape painting in the second half of his life. The cliche that Gustav Klimt was a man of few words who rarely put pen to paper is vehemently dispelled: no less than 231 letters, cards, writings and other documents--all known Klimt correspondence--are included in this monograph. This wealth of archival material, assembled here for the first time on such a scale, represents a major contribution to Klimt scholarship"--Publisher's description

Art for all : der Farbholzschnitt in Wien um 1900 = the colour woodcut in Vienna around 1900 = la gravure sur bois en couleur à Vienne vers 1900( Book )

6 editions published in 2016 in German and English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the turn of the 20th century, amid the domed grandeur of Vienna, a group of Secession artists reclaimed the humble woodblock. The gesture, though short-lived, and long overlooked by established art histories, may be seen as a decisive social, as well as aesthetic, moment. Elevating a primarily illustrative, mass-production medium to the status of fine art, the woodblock revival set a formal precedent for Expressionism while democratizing an art for all. Coinciding with the travelling exhibition through the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt and Albertina, Vienna, this Taschen edition brings together leading examples of the Viennese woodblock renaissance to give a long overdue exploration of its achievements and influence. Through prints, publications, calendars and pages from Ver Sacrum, the official magazine of the Vienna Secession, it gathers works remarkable for their graphic and chromatic intensity, and vital with the traces of japonisme as much as the stylistic seeds of Die Brucke, Der Blaue Reiter and later Expressionist movements. Through figure studies, landscapes, patterns, and typographical treasures, the featured works are accompanied by detailed captions, as well as essays exploring their aesthetic and ideological implications, and biographies for the more than 40 artists. Examining their stark contours, stylization of the surface per se, and tendency towards contained color areas we evaluate the Viennese woodblocks as essential harbingers, and benchmarks, of the 20th century modernism to come. At the same time, we assess how the dissemination of the woodblock substantiated the Seccessionist claim for a democratized, all-encompassing art, while adding to their reappraisal of originality, and authenticity, and convention

Klimt and antiquity : erotic encounters( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gustav Klimt's 1907 publication of his illustrated edition of Lucian's ancient work 'Dialogues of the Courtesans' was the first time he exhibited his erotic art to the public, and it led to his denouncement by censors disturbed by the work's graphic content. This volume revives Klimt's masterful book, which pairs his erotic drawings with Wiener Werksta tte design, and which arguably resulted in the Art Nouveau era's most beautiful book. Klimt and Antiquity also compares the red- and black- figure Attic vases dating from the 5th century with Klimt's art. It presents Klimt's antiquity-inspired art as a dialogue between contemporary and ancient art, between genders, and between women's roles in times of antiquity and modernity. Essays explore Klimt's interest in ancient art; the ancient role of the courtesan; and the phenomenon of the Greek symposium as fertile ground for Greek art. Die Praxis der Ausstellung über museale Konzepte auf Zeit und auf Dauer ; [Dokumentation der Fachtagungen "Mit Dingen erzählen. Die Schausammlung" (Bregenz, 4. November 2010) und "Mit Dingen argumentieren. Die Sonderausstellung" (Bregenz, 3. März 2011]( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in German and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rezension Besprochen in: Mitteilungsblatt, 8 (2012)
