"The history of West Berlin from the end of the Second World War to the days following the building of the Wall on August 13, 1961, from the perspective of the leaders of the German Democratic Republic. From a communist perspective the Eastern section of Berlin was portrayed as a city of peace, while the West was portrayed as the source of constant disruptions. West Berlin could only be resisted by forcefully isolating it by the creation of the wall which would secure the possibility of peace in Europe"

Schaut auf diese Stadt ( Visual )
3 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in German and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This polemical documentary -- using rare authentic images and newsreels from both sides -- justifies the erection of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961. It represents West Berlin as the frontline of neo-fascism, terrorism, and neo-colonialism -- against which the peaceful city of East Berlin requires an 'antifascist defense.' Made at the behest of those responsible for GDR propaganda, Gass' trademark fast-paced editing and montage create a seamless, if skewed, rendition of the post-WWII history of Berlin." -- Container

"A Jewish chief surgeon in Berlin, Professor Mamlock believes in reason, humanism and his country. As 1933 begins, he remains blind to the increasing anti-Semitism around him. He is troubled by those with opposing political views and throws his communist-leaning son out of the house. And he cannot believe that his daughter is driven from her school because she is Jewish. As the Nazis consolidate their power and new racial laws bar Mamlock from working at his hospital, his devastation leaves him no alternative"--The DEFA Film Library website

Das Leben des Jürgen von Golzow ein Film ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2002 in German and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a project begun three years before Michael Apted's "7 Up" films began, the documentary set, of which this disc is part, follows 18 residents (born from 1953 to 1955) of the rural town of Golzow in the Oderbruch region of Brandenburg between Germany and Poland. The film series captures each person starting from the age of six, dealing with the personal situations of the characters and filming them in dramatic situations. The videos collectively convey a social panorama over time, and reveal some universal truths about growing older, as well as give a deep view into the history of the GDR and of the reunification process with West Germany. The filming of the series took place intermittently between 1961 and 2007
