Field ion microscopy; principles and applications by Erwin W Müller( Book )

18 editions published between 1964 and 1970 in English and Undetermined and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The basic physical effects used in field ion microscopy are not yet fully understood. Field evaporation rates of tungsten were measured in the range from 0.01 to 10,000,000 atomic layers/sec, yielding the polarizability of a kink site surface atom, the activation energy and the pre-exponential of the field evaporation equation. Using the polarizability, the dipole-dipole binding energy of field-adsorbed noble gases ahs been calculated, and a modified mechanism of field ionization and image interpretation is proposed. A high-voltage field ion microscope has been operated at up to 45 kV, giving an increased field of view. (Author)

FIELD ION MICROSCOPY OF IRON WHISKERS by Osamu Nishikawa( Book )

1 edition published in 1963 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Field ion microscopy of non-refractory metals was improved by the use of neon and neon-helium gas mixtures. A limited number of iron whiskers was observed and found to contain a high density of lattice defects, such as impurity atoms, single dislocations, and dense dislocation areas of an almost amorphous structure, particularly in the 111 region. The latter defect is an artifact caused by the stress of the evaporation field. Further progress will depend upon a reduction of this field, and the use of an image intensifier. (Author)
FIELD ION MICROSCOPY OF RHENIUM( Book )

1 edition published in 1962 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This note examines the ion microscopic image of rhenium. Features of the ion image discussed are the evaporation field at 20K, the intensity alternation of net plane rings around the 0001 pole, the decoration by bright atoms of six (2110) zone lines emerging radially from the 0001 plane, the existence of a high dislocation density in a concentric area 20 to 30 degrees of the c-axis, and the adsorption of residual gas. Illustrations of ion images of rhenium are presented

FIELD EVAPORATION RATES OF TUNGSTEN( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Essential parameters of the theory of field evaporation are the higher ionization potentials of the metal, the surface atom's distance from the effective electronic surface plane of the metal, the polarizability of the surface atom in its site, the energy difference between the atomic and the ionic states of the surface atom, the rate and temperature dependent activation energy, and the pre-exponential factor of the Arrhenius equation. It is shown how these data can be obtained from field evaporation rate measurements. Experiments with the (110) plane of tungsten were carried out in a range from 0.01 layer/sec to 10,000,000 layers/sec using both DC and pulsed field evaporation techniques. Results are discussed. It is also shown that the well known reduction of the evaporation field by the imaging gas is to a considerable extent due to the field induced adsorption of the gas. (Author)

V. Formation of negative ions by processes other than attachment in the gaseous phase at low X/po 17. Introduction. As early as 1912, J.J. THOMSON [32J in his first mass spectro graph observed negative ions of 0-, Cl-, H- and what he believed to be N-. He at first ascribed these to possible dissociation of polar gaseous compounds by electron impact but control studies using ionization at low energies in glow discharges indicated that this was not the origin. O.W. RICHARDSON [33J in his book on emission of electricity from hot bodies reported negative ions to come from hot salts. From there on many experimental studies over the years indicated that negative ions could be formed by various processes. By the middle nineteen hundred and thirties the data fairly clearly identified several processes as being active and MASSEY and SMITH [34J developed the theory underlying some of them. More data are summarized in MASSEY'S excellent little monograph on Negative Ions and in)L\SSEY and BURHOP'S recent book [35]. Since that period, stimulated by various investigations and certain industrial problems, very careful studies of the appearance of such ions by mass spectrograph have been carried out in the laboratory of K.G. EMELEUS in Belfast by SLOANE and his co-workers [3J that haw clarified the questions and indicated what ions have been observed and something of the processes at work
