Filamentary iron crystals of the C, D and H Series as furnished by Air Force Materials Laboratory were observed in several cross sections along the total length using the field ion microscope. No change in crystal orientation was noticed for (001), (111) and (110) oriented specimens. The previously discussed amorphous core structure was found to be caused by yield in the (111) region due to the field stress. Hydrogen promoted field evaporation is a means of shaping the tip surface at a reduced field strength so that artifacts can be avoided and perfect (111) planes can be developed. The few dislocations observed place no limit on the strength of the tip core which withstands a field stress of 710 kg/sq mm, or 4% of the bulk modulus. (Author)

Field ion microscopy of non-refractory metals was improved by the use of neon and neon-helium gas mixtures. A limited number of iron whiskers was observed and found to contain a high density of lattice defects, such as impurity atoms, single dislocations, and dense dislocation areas of an almost amorphous structure, particularly in the 111 region. The latter defect is an artifact caused by the stress of the evaporation field. Further progress will depend upon a reduction of this field, and the use of an image intensifier. (Author)

This note examines the ion microscopic image of rhenium. Features of the ion image discussed are the evaporation field at 20K, the intensity alternation of net plane rings around the 0001 pole, the decoration by bright atoms of six (2110) zone lines emerging radially from the 0001 plane, the existence of a high dislocation density in a concentric area 20 to 30 degrees of the c-axis, and the adsorption of residual gas. Essential parameters of the theory of field evaporation are the higher ionization potentials of the metal, the surface atom's distance from the effective electronic surface plane of the metal, the polarizability of the surface atom in its site, the energy difference between the atomic and the ionic states of the surface atom, the rate and temperature dependent activation energy, and the pre-exponential factor of the Arrhenius equation. It is shown how these data can be obtained from field evaporation rate measurements. Experiments with the (110) plane of tungsten were carried out in a range from 0.01 layer/sec to 10,000,000 layers/sec using both DC and pulsed field evaporation techniques. Results are discussed. It is also shown that the well known reduction of the evaporation field by the imaging gas is to a considerable extent due to the field induced adsorption of the gas. (Author)
