How wide are European borders? On the integration effects of monetary unions by Günter W Beck( )

6 editions published between 2001 and 2005 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We use consumer price data for 81 European cities (in Germany, Austria, Finland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland) to study the impact of the introduction of the euro on goods market integration. Employing both aggregated and disaggregated consumer price index (CPI) data we confirm previous results which showed that the distance between European cities explains a significant amount of the variation in the prices of similar goods in different locations. We also find that the variation of relative prices is much higher for two cities located in different countries than for two equidistant cities in the same country. Under the EMU, the elimination of nominal exchange rate volatility has largely reduced these border effects, but distance and border still matter for intra-European relative price volatility. Has the monetary transmission process in the euro area changed? : evidence based on VAR estimates by Axel A Weber( Book )

11 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Empirical evidence on whether the euro area monetary transmission process has changed is, at best, mixed. We argue that this inconclusiveness is likely to be due to the fact that existing empirical studies concentrate on the effects of a particular development on a specific transmission channel. Another problem of this literature is that specific changes could have off-setting effects regarding the overall effectiveness of monetary policy, leaving open the question whether the ability of monetary policy to control inflation has been altered. In order to shed light on this issue, we investigate whether there has been a significant change in the overall transmission of monetary policy to inflation and output by estimating a standard VAR for the euro area and by searching for a possible break date. We find a significant break point around 1996 and some evidence for a second one around 1999. We compare impulse responses to a monetary policy shock for these episodes and find that the well-known "stylised facts" of monetary policy transmission remain valid. Therefore, we argue that the general guiding principles of the Eurosystem monetary policy remain adequate. Moreover, it seems that monetary transmission after 1998 is not very different from before 1996, but probably very different in the interim period. This implies that evidence for the euro area could be biased by an "atypical" interim period 1996-1999. This is part of a series of BIS Working Papers (273 to 278) collecting papers presented at the BIS's Seventh Annual Conference on "Whither monetary policy? Monetary policy challenges in the decade ahead" in Luzern, Switzerland, on 26-27 June 2008. The event brought together senior representatives of central banks and academic institutions to exchange views on this topic. BIS Paper 45 contains the opening address of William R White (BIS), the contributions of the policy panel on "Beyond price stability - the challenges ahead" and speeches by Edmund Phelps (Columbia University) and Martin Wolf (Financial Times). The participants in the policy panel discussion chaired by Malcolm D Knight (BIS) were Martin Feldstein (Harvard University), Stanley Fischer (Bank of Israel), Mark Carney (Bank of Canada) and Jean-Pierre Landau (Banque de France). This Working Paper includes comments by Marvin Goodfriend and Armínio Fraga Neto.--

Economic integration and the exchange rate regime how damaging are currency crises? by Axel A Weber( )

3 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We use consumer price data for 205 cities/regions in 21 countries to study PPP deviations before, during and after the major currency crises of the 1990s. We combine data from industrialized nations in North America (Unites States, Canada and Mexico), Europe (Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal), Asia (Japan and South Korea), and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) with corresponding data from emerging market economies in South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia) and Asia (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand). By doing so, we confirm previous results that both distance and border explain a significant amount of relative price variation across different locations. We also find that currency attacks had major disintegration effects by considerably increasing these border effects and by raising within-country relative price dispersion in emerging market economies. These effects are found to be quite persistent since relative price volatility across emerging markets today is still significantly larger than a decade ago. Stochastic process switching and intervention in exchange rate target zones : empirical evidence from the EMS by Axel A Weber( Book )

8 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Exchange rate target zone models postulate that 'in the absence of intervention' exchange rates are driven by their fundamentals, which in this case are assumed to follow an unregulated Brownian motion process-the continuous time equivalent of a random walk (with drift). Such random walk behaviour of freely floating exchange rates is a well-documented stylized fact. The possibility of policy intervention in foreign exchange markets, however, may lead to stochastic process switching: in a perfectly credible target zone the commitment of policy-makers to intervene at the boundaries of a band for the fundamentals gives rise to speculative bubbles, which stabilize the exchange rate within a narrower band. Inframarginal intervention may add to these stabilizing effects. On the other hand, in target zones which are imperfectly credible, policy intervention may also take the form of a realignment, a permanent jump in the central parity. The present paper employs a Bayesian approach to estimate the relative probabilities of these forms of stochastic process switching by using daily data on the Deutschmark exchange rate for the EMS currencies. The analysis reveals that for these EMS target zones intervention and realignment probabilities have recently declined drastically, and that the ERM is now close to being a fully credible peg
