These audio cassette tape recordings record a full day program of lectures in honor of the scientific contributions of geophysicists Russell Raitt and Victor Vacquier held at Sumner Auditorium of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD on October 13, 1992. The program was divided into two sessions organized by George Shor and John Sclater. The morning program was introduced by SIO Director Emeritus William A. Nierenberg and included remarks by Cecil Green on Geophysical Service Inc. and on Victor Vacquier.

The Marine Physical Laboratory was established in 1946 as a successor of the University of California, Division of War Research (UCDWR). This accession includes some UCDWR records, but consists largely of MPL records dated 1946-1980 which were maintained as central laboratory files at MPL at Point Loma. The accession includes correspondence, memoranda, proposals, contracts, blueprints, sketches and photographs documenting the administration of MPL and research conducted by MPL scientists under federal contract. The accession includes material documenting MPL projects, including FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform), DIMUS, and Deep Tow. The accession includes correspondence and other files of MPL administrators and scientists Victor Anderson, Fred Noel Spiess, Harald Ulrik Sverdrup and Victor Vacquier.

The collection consists of a photocopy of a typescript of the November 15, 1966 draft of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Technician's Handbook. This draft was compiled by Frederick S. Dixon who also wrote several chapters in the text and edited others. Contributors to the manuscript include: Daniel M. Brown, Thomas E. Chase, A.S. Dunlap, Jeffery Dean Frautxchy, Christopher G. Harrison, Tetsuo Matsui, John D. Mudie, A.E. Rees, Arthur Datus Raff, George G. Shor, Maxwell Silverman, Victor Vacquier, Robert E. Warren, and Lees Waterman.
