Stephen N. Jacox, Sr. (1819-1896) married Permelia Carpenter, daughter of Jeremiah Carpenter, in 1845. They had six children born at Pillar Point, Jefferson County, New York. He served in the Civil War with the New York Volunteers. He and wife are buried wife are buried at Belfort, New York. Descendants lived in New York and elsewhere. Some descendants spell their name Jaycox

The infrared spectra of a number of free radicals and molecular ions which are expected to be important in nitramine decomposition and combustion have been obtained in solid neon. The molecular ion studies resulted in the first infrared spectral detection of dimer ions in a non-interactive environment. The ions chosen for study are important in the lower ionosphere and in combustion and high energy processes involving carbon- and nitrogen- containing materials. Other studies used monomethylnitramine (MMN) as a model compound for elucidating the chemistry of nitramine decomposition. The infrared spectrum of MMN isolated in solid neon was obtained using a manifold designed for matrix isolation sampling of low vapor pressure materials. Supporting evidence was obtained for a mechanism recently proposed by Melius for water- catalyzed nitramine decomposition. The photodecomposition of matrix-isolated MMN was studied. Evidence was obtained supporting initial detachment of NO2 and cage recombination to form the nitrite in a solid environment. In order to prevent molecular diffusion and subsequent reactions, the species of interest was trapped in a large excess of solid argon at cryogenic temperatures. The vibrational spectrum previously reported for the nitromethyl free radical has been further analyzed to give additional information on the structure and chemical bonding properties of that species

In order to obtain a detailed characterization of the chemistry and energetics of the processes which constitute the first stages of the decomposition of the model propellants nitromethane and methyl nitrite, three types of experiment were pursued. In the first series of studies, infrared spectra were obtained for the products of the ultraviolet photodissociation of these two compounds isolated in solid argon at 14 K. Infrared spectra were also obtained for the products of H-atom abstraction from nitromethane and methyl nitrite, including the first spectroscopic observation of the nitromethyl free radical. A summary of the information obtained regarding the chemical reaction mechanism for the first stages of the decomposition of nitromethane and methyl nitrite is presented. In the second series of experiments, the characteristics of a CO2 laser with a uniquely will defined radiation pulse were tested and this laser was used together with laser-induced fluorescence detection to obtain the energy distribution in the resulting NO when methyl nitrite was dissociated. A marked preference for one spin-orbit state of the NO was observed. The third series of experiments was concerned with the infrared multiphoton dissociation of a pulsed beam of methyl nitrate or nitromethane coupled with matrix isolation sampling and infrared study of the resulting decomposition products

Although the mass spectrometric detection of molecular ions is common place, relatively little is known about their structures and the properties of their chemical bonds. Studies of the vibrational and electronic spectra of these species are exceptionally well suited to obtaining this information. Such studies would have the bonus of providing a basis for the development of non-intrusive, in situ laser probes for molecular ions in the lower ionosphere and in such important chemical reaction systems as those of chemical vapor deposition and microcircuit etching. Because of their great chemical reactivity, it has been difficult to maintain sufficiently high ion concentrations for molecular spectroscopic study. Reprints. (jes)

High resolution infrared spectra have been obtained for polycrystalline C2H4 at 4 K and 53 K and for C2D4 at 53 K. The observed multiplet structure of the fundamental vibrations is in good agreement with the group theoretical predictions. In C2H4 there is evidence for a gradual phase transition between 4 K and 53 K, involving reorientation of the planes of the H atoms of C2H4 molecules in the crystal. The Raman-active fundamentals have been observed, weakly, in thick deposits of C2H4 at 4 K. (Author)
