The thesis approaches the issue through the application of remote sensing techiques. The thesis makes several contributions in thus area. First, it establishes the relationship between surface coverage proportions and weight fractions of cane, leaf and tops. It then demonstrates the variability in surface coverage proportions for given weight fractions and establishes the minimum image areas necessary for a given precision in weight fraction estimate. ..."--Page xv-xvi
