Scott family letters by Stella Houghton Scott ( )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The majority of the 20 letters (more than 50 pages) in this collection were penned by Stella Scott to her friend, Mrs. Susan B. Thomas of Jackson, La. She addressed others to her parents. In addition, there is one letter to their parents from Scott's sister, Harriet Fyler, along with two by Scott's daughter, Harriet, addressed to her uncle Henry Houghton. Letters written following Scott's death in 1844 were written by her husband, and include one to Susan Thomas describing the death of his wife and including a lock of her hair. Beyond the activities and health of family, friends, and mutual acquaintances, topics include Scott's reading habits; her difficulties with a former boarder; her own health challenges, including "nature's change" and pregnancy; and the differences in southern and northern education, with the former found wanting. Throughout the letters there is a constant focus on religion, both its general value and with attention to her personal salvation, with emphasis on Wesleyan Methodism. Includes partial transcription of the letters
