En un peu plus de quinze ans, entre 1875 et 1891, Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), publie dans la presse 300 nouvelles. Son entrée en littérature s'accomplit sous la protection de Gustave Bouilhet, puis de Flaubert qui le guide, l'encourage et lui porte de l'affection. Le débutant pénètre dans le cercle des écrivains naturalistes ou réalistes. Il se lie d'amitié avec Tourgueniev, devient proche de Zola - "Boule de Suif" paraît dans le recueil Les Soirées de Médan. "Je ne crois pas plus au naturalisme et au réalisme qu'au romantisme. Ces mots à mon sens ne signifient absolument rien et ne servent qu'à des querelles de tempéraments opposés. [.] Soyons des originaux [.], soyons l'Origine de quelque chose - Quoi ? Peu importe pourvu que ce soit beau et que cela ne se rattache pas à une tradition finie". Au cours de ces quinze ans, il publie aussi six romans. En dehors de la littérature, il se passionne pour le canotage. Viveur, grand amateur de bordels, bisexuel, fier de ses prouesses dont il fait grand cas, Maupassant est contaminé par la syphilis, sans doute dès l'âge de 23 ans. Il meurt, à 43 ans, de cette maladie que l'on ne sait pas soigner à l'époque, dans la clinique du Dr Blanche. Dans les Contes et Nouvelles, Maupassant a relevé son défi. Être original. L'auteur reste froid, cynique, devant le monde rural ou bourgeois qu'il décrit. Le désespoir est l'affaire des autres
