The next America : boomers, millennials, and the looming generational showdown by Paul Taylor( Book )

18 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,887 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The America of the near future will look nothing like the America of the recent past. America is in the throes of a demographic overhaul. Huge generation gaps have opened up in our political and social values, our economic well-being, our family structure, our racial and ethnic identity, our gender norms, our religious affiliation, and our technology use. Today's Millennials -- well-educated, tech savvy, underemployed twenty-somethings -- are at risk of becoming the first generation in American history to have a lower standard of living than their parents. Meantime, more than 10,000 Baby Boomers are retiring every single day, most of them not as well prepared financially as they'd hoped. This graying of our population has helped polarize our politics, put stresses on our social safety net, and presented our elected leaders with a daunting challenge: How to keep faith with the old without bankrupting the young and starving the future

The military-civilian gap : war and sacrifice in the post-9/11 era( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

America's post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are unique. Never before has this nation been engaged in conflicts for so long. And never before has it waged sustained warfare with so small a share of its population carrying the fight. This report sets out to explore a series of questions that arise from these historical anomalies. The report compares and contrasts the attitudes of post-9/11 veterans, pre-9/11 veterans and the general public on a wide range of matters, including sacrifice; burden sharing; patriotism; the worth of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; the efficiency of the military and the effectiveness of modern military tactics; the best way to fight terrorism; the desirability of a return of the military draft; the nature of America's place in the world; and the gaps in understanding between the military and civilians. It also presents what we believe is a vivid portrait, albeit one painted exclusively in numbers, of the rewards and burdens of serving in the all-volunteer military during the past decade

A rise in wealth for the wealthy ; declines for the lower 93% : an uneven recovery, 2009-2011 by Richard Fry( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the first two years of the nation's economic recovery, the mean net worth of households in the upper 7 per cent of the wealth distribution rose by an estimated 28 per cent, while the mean net worth of households in the lower 93 per cent dropped by 4 per cent, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of newly released Census Bureau data. From 2009 to 2011, the mean wealth of the 8 million households in the more affluent group rose to an estimated 3,173,895 dollars from an estimated 2,476,244 dollars, while the mean wealth of the 111 million households in the less affluent group fell to an estimated 133,817 dollars from an estimated 139,896 dollars. These wide variances were driven by the fact that the stock and bond market rallied during the 2009 to 2011 period while the housing market remained flat. Affluent households typically have their assets concentrated in stocks and other financial holdings, while less affluent households typically have their wealth more heavily concentrated in the value of their home."--Overview
Illegal immigration backlash worries, divides Latinos by Mark Hugo López( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The national political backlash against illegal immigration has created new divisions among Latinos and heightened their concerns about discrimination against members of their ethnic group-including those who were born in the United States or who immigrated legally. A small majority says unauthorized immigrants should pay a fine but not be deported, while small minority says they should be deported and a larger minority says they should not be punished. Hispanics are also divided about the impact of illegal immigration on Hispanics already living in the U.S. Some 29% say the impact has been positive, down from 50% who said the same in 2007. Despite rising concerns about discrimination against Latinos, the survey finds no increase in the share who say they or a family member has been a victim of ethnic bias.--Publisher description

The rise of intermarriage : rates, characteristics vary by race and gender by Wendy Wang( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This report analyzes the demographic and economic characteristics of newlyweds who marry spouses of a different race or ethnicity, and compares the traits of those who "marry out" with those who "marry in." The newlywed pairs are grouped by the race and ethnicity of the husband and wife, and are compared in terms of earnings, education, age of spouse, region of residence and other characteristics. This report is primarily based on the Pew Research Center's analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) in 2008-2010 and on findings from three of the Center's own nationwide telephone surveys that explore public attitudes toward intermarriage."--Executive summary, p.1
