The stability of matter from atoms to stars : selecta of Elliott H. Lieb by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
38 editions published between 1991 and 2006 in English and German and held by 1,143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collection of papers - starting with a brilliant review article by one of the masters of the field - gives an excellent view of our present knowledge of matter. Partially basing his work on a variational formulation of quantum mechanics E.H. Lieb links the difficult question of stability of matter with deep problems of functional analysis. In this collection the reader will find general results together with deep insights into quantum systems combined in papers on the structure of atoms and molecules, on the thermodynamics limit, and on stellar structure. The book is suitable as an accompanying text for a graduate course in quantum mechanics
Analysis by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
24 editions published between 1996 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 797 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The mathematics of the Bose gas and its condensation by Elliott H Lieb ( )
17 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book contains a unique survey of the mathematically rigorous results about the quantum-mechanical many-body problem that have been obtained by the authors in the past seven years. It addresses a topic that is not only rich mathematically, using a large variety of techniques in mathematical analysis, but is also one with strong ties to current experiments on ultra-cold Bose gases and Bose-Einstein condensation. The book provides a pedagogical entry into an active area of ongoing research for both graduate students and researchers."--Jacket
Mathematical physics in one dimension; exactly soluble models of interacting particles by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
17 editions published between 1966 and 1981 in 3 languages and held by 497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Studies in mathematical physics : essays in honor of Valentine Bargmann ( Book )
8 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The stability of matter in quantum mechanics by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
12 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Research into the stability of matter has been one of the most successful chapters in mathematical physics, and is a prime example of how modern mathematics can be applied to problems in physics. A unique account of the subject, this book provides a complete, self-contained description of research on the stability of matter problem. It introduces the necessary quantum mechanics to mathematicians, and aspects of functional analysis to physicists. The topics covered include electrodynamics of classical and quantized fields, Lieb-Thirring and other inequalities in spectral theory, inequalities in electrostatics, stability of large Coulomb systems, gravitational stability of stars, basics of equilibrium statistical mechanics, and the existence of the thermodynamic limit. The book is an up-to-date account for researchers, and its pedagogical style makes it suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematical physics"--Résumé de l'éditeur
Inequalities : selecta of Elliott H. Lieb by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
9 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Inequalities play a fundamental role in Functional Analysis and it is widely recognized that finding them, especially sharp estimates, is an art. E.H. Lieb has discovered a host of inequalities that are enormously useful in mathematics as well as in physics. His results are collected in this book which should become a standard source for further research. Together with the mathematical proofs the author also presents numerous applications to the calculus of variations and to many problems of quantum physics, in particular to atomic physics
Condensed matter physics and exactly soluble models : selecta of Elliott H. Lieb by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
8 editions published between 2004 and 2011 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The first part of this book contains E. Lieb's fundamental contributions to the mathematical theory of Condensed Matter Physics. Often considered the founding father of the field, E. Lieb demonstrates his ability to select the most important issues and to formulate them as well-defined mathematical problems and, finally, to solve them. The second part presents Lieb's work on integrable models. His groundbreaking articles helped to establish Exactly Soluble Models as a flourishing research field in its own right. The papers collected in this volume have also been carefully annotated by the editors
Statistical mechanics : selecta of Elliott H. Lieb by Elliott H Lieb ( Book )
7 editions published between 2004 and 2011 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In Statistical Physics one of the ambitious goals is to derive rigorously, from statistical mechanics, the thermodynamic properties of models with realistic forces. Elliott Lieb is a mathematical physicist who meets the challenge of statistical mechanics head on, taking nothing for granted and not being content until the purported consequences have been shown, by rigorous analysis, to follow from the premises. The present volume contains a selection of his contributions to the field, in particular papers dealing with general properties of Coulomb systems, phase transitions in systems with a continuous symmetry, lattice crystals, and entropy inequalities. It also includes work on classical thermodynamics, a discipline that, despite many claims to the contrary, is logically independent of statistical mechanics and deserves a rigorous and unambiguous foundation of its own. The articles in this volume have been carefully annotated by the editors
The state of matter : a volume dedicated to E.H. Lieb by M Aizenman ( Book )
4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book, a collection of works by leading figures in the field, provides a view of the current research in a broad area of mathematical physics. The collection celebrates Elliot H Lieb's sixtieth birthday and his imprint on the subject. The preface by W Thirring offers a glimpse into the life and work-style of Lieb and some of his contemporaries
