Toward the outside : concepts and themes in Emmanuel Levinas by Michael B Smith( Book )

9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 332 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this accessible and carefully crafted work, Michael B. Smith provides readers a systematic exposition of the essential concepts and themes that circulate throughout the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, a major voice in twentieth century thought. Unlike many recent studies that have pur-ported to examine the scope of Levinas's thinking, "Toward the Outside" is distinguished by its attention to texts from both of Levinas's two main genres: the philosophical and the confessional. Organised in three parts, the first examines key pairs of concepts -- totality/infinity, same/other, saying/said, among others. In Part 2, Smith more explicitly identifies themes that are essential to our better understand-ing of Levinas -- Judaism and the Holocaust, temporality, Levinas's treatments of Husserl and Heidegger, Derrida's reading of Levinas, and others. Finally, in Part 3, his commentary, based on close readings of selected Levinas texts, meticulously follows and highlights the development of Levinas's thought

Machiavelli in the making by Claude Lefort( Book )

7 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Machiavelli in the Making, the influential French scholar and public intellectual Claude Lefort introduces a wholly novel interpretation of Niccoló Machiavelli's oeuvre, revealing in the Florentine's thought a thoroughly modern concept of the political with implications for "our experience of politics here and now." Lefort extricates Machiavelli's thought from the dominant interpretations of Machiavelli as the founder of "objective" political science, which, having liberated itself from the religious and moralizing tendencies of medieval political reflection, attempts to arrive at a realistic discourse on the operations of raw power. Lefort ultimately finds that Machiavelli's discourse opens the "place of the political," which had previously been occupied by theology and morality. An essential contribution to the ongoing reassessment of Machiavelli's significance, Machiavelli in the Making also stands as a crucial text for the understanding of Lefort's later writings on democracy and totallitarianism

The mystic fable by Michel de Certeau( Book )

4 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Though the second volume of this groundbreaking work remained in fragments at the time of his death, Michel de Certeau left his literary executor detailed instructions for its completion, which formed the basis for the present work. Together, both volumes solidify his place as a touchstone of 20th-century literature and philosophy, and continue his exploration of the paradoxes of historiography; the construction of social reality through practice, testimony and belief; the theorisation of speech in angelology and glossolalia; and the interplay of prose and poetry in discourses of the ineffable

Heidegger, the introduction of Nazism into philosophy in light of the unpublished seminars of 1933-1935 by Emmanuel Faye( Book )

3 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the most comprehensive examination to date of Heidegger's Nazism, Emmanuel Faye draws on previously unavailable materials to paint a damning picture of Nazism's influence on the philosopher's thought and politics. In this provocative book, Faye uses excerpts from unpublished seminars to show that Heidegger's philosophical writings are fatally compromised by an adherence to National Socialist ideas. In other documents, Faye finds expressions of racism and exterminatory anti-Semitism. Faye disputes the view of Heidegger as a naïve, temporarily disoriented academician and instead shows him to have been a self-appointed "spiritual guide" for Nazism whose intentionality was clear. Contrary to what some have written, Heidegger's Nazism became even more radical after 1935, as Faye demonstrates. He revisits Heidegger's masterwork, Being and Time, and concludes that in it Heidegger does not present a philosophy of individual existence but rather a doctrine of radical self-sacrifice, where individualization is allowed only for the purpose of heroism in warfare. Faye's book was highly controversial when originally published in France in 2005. Now available in Michael B. Smith's fluid English translation, it is bound to awaken controversy in the English-speaking world. - Publisher

In the time of the nations by Emmanuel Lévinas( Book )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The 'nations' of the title are the 'seventy nations': in the Talmudic idiom, the whole of humanity surrounding Israel. In this major collection of essays, Levinas considers Judaism's uncertain relationship to European culture since the Enlightenment, problems of distance and integration. It also includes five Talmudic readings from between 1981 and 1986, essays on Franz Rosenzweig and Moses Mendelssohn, and a discussion with Francoise Armengaud which raises questions of central importance to Jewish philosophy in the context of general philosophy. This work brings to the fore the vital encounter between philosophy and Judaism, a hallmark of Levinas's thought
