Explosion effects modeling of self-sealing underground explosive storage chamber designs by ʻAlī Amīnī( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study investigates the potential performance of self sealing chambers in rock as a means of containing the blast effects from an accidental explosion in an underground ammunition storage complex. The work was performed as part of the Joint U.S./ROK R & D Program for New Underground Ammunition Storage Technologies. A coherent method for modeling of self sealing systems is presented. This method illustrated that observations made during field investigations can be incorporated into simulation models for realistic prediction of the behavior of storage chambers during an accidental explosion. The modeling approach incorporated a thermodynamic/numeric technique using a distinct element numerical code (UDEC). Three self sealing scenarios were modeled: a sliding block a weak wall exhaust drift, and a single weak wall. The performance of the weak wall exhaust concept was superior to the other designs evaluated. The analysis indicated that this self sealing design was most successfull for reduction of the escaping gas pressure

Investigation of the Interface Phenomena Due to Interaction of High Intensity Stress Waves with Material Boundaries( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A theoretical model for the interface between two geologically different rock layers, subjected to high intensity stress waves is developed in this research study The purpose for this model is to study the stress waves that are generated at the interface when there is large slip and failure along the interface. The stress range of interest was selected to lie above the elastic region, and below the region where the material behaves like a fluid (hydrodynamic region). This is due to a well understood behavior under elastic conditions, and the fact that in the hydrodynamic region the effects of the interface will be diffused. The model was developed by deriving appropriate stress-strain relationships, and solution of stress and displacement boundary equations at the interface. Because of the nonlinear behavior of geologic materials over the stress range of interest, and material failure at high stresses, the set of boundary equations at the interface was non-linear and discontinuous. This required the development of a numerical algorithm which was iterative in nature, and incremental in time. In each iteration the condition of failure at the interface and discontinuity of parameters across the interface were examined, and appropriate equations were selected. The results of the numerical modeling indicated that non-linearity in stresses and displacements, and material failure across the interface were important parameters in the generation of new waves at the interface. The generated waves included reflected and refracted P and S-waves, as well as surface waves that propagated along the interface. Investigation of the Interface Phenomena Due to Interaction of High Intensity Stress Waves with Geologic Boundaries( )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the reporting period a stress-strain relationship was derived for the study of the interface phenomena when a high intensity stress wave impinges on a geologic boundary. The derived relationship was based on the ultimate density concept, i.e., the density of the material increases non- linearly with increasing stresses approaching a limiting value before a polymorphic phase transformation occurs. The derived stress-strain relationship was compared with high pressure data for three rock types. Based on this comparison it was determined that the derived stress-strain relationship modeled material behavior accurately with realistic physical parameters. The relationship was then used in the solution of second order non-linear Partial Differential Equations (PDE) of motion. The method of similarity was used to transform the non-linear PDE to an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE). The ODE was then solved by standard techniques. The result was a closed form equation for particle displacement profiles in space and time domains including particle velocity acceleration and stress profiles. These profiles will be used in upcoming tasks to determine the role of various parameters in the generation of new waves at interfaces with mediums of finite thickness and the response at interfaces which can be described by a half-space
