Fourteen letters (negative photocopies) from Geyer, a German botanist working in America. Eleven (in German) are to George Engelmann (another German botanist working in St. Louis, Mo.) concerning Geyer's field work in Illinois in 1842 and with the expedition of Sir William Stewart up the Missouri and down the Columbia from 1843 to 1845. One letter was written to George C. Thorburn from Spokan Mission, Oregon Territory (Dec. 28, 1843). Two letters were written from Honolulu, Hawaii, where members of the Stewart expedition stopped on their return to England: one (Jan. 10, 1845, in English) was written to Reverend Father De Smet at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Mission, Flathead Country, Oregon; the other (Jan. 11, 1845, in German) was written to Engelmann. Although the letters relate primarily to botanical observations, they also contain references to John C. Fremont, Joseph N. Nicollet, the Hudson's Bay Company with its many posts and factors, and the country through which Geyer passed. With typed transcripts for the letters that are in German (source unknown)
