The story of reason in Islam by Sari Nusseibeh( Book )

5 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In The Story of Reason in Islam, leading public intellectual and political activist Sari Nusseibeh narrates a sweeping intellectual history—a quest for knowledge inspired by the Qu'ran and its language, a quest that employed Reason in the service of Faith. Eschewing the conventional separation of Faith and Reason, he takes a fresh look at why and how Islamic reasoning evolved over time. He surveys the different Islamic schools of thought and how they dealt with major philosophical issues, showing that Reason pervaded all disciplines, from philosophy and science to language, poetry, and law. Along the way, the best known Muslim philosophers are introduced in a new light. Countering received chronologies, in this story Reason reaches its zenith in the early seventeenth century; it then trails off, its demise as sudden as its appearance. Thereafter, Reason loses out to passive belief, lifeless logic, and a self-contained legalism—in other words, to a less flexible Islam. Nusseibeh's speculations as to why this occurred focus on the fortunes and misfortunes of classical Arabic in the Islamic world. Change, he suggests, may only come from the revivification of language itself. -- Provided by publisher
Suicide bombers : inside the minds of failed martyrs( Visual )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a series of powerful and revealing interviews from inside Israeli prisons, this documentary examines the motives of Palestinian suicide bombers. A recruiter, a bomb builder, and three failed suicide bombers captured by Israeli security forces speak openly of their training, motivation, operational methodology, and profound belief in the idea of entering paradise as a shahid -- a martyr for Islam. They discuss their hatred of Jews and Israel, their determination to die, and the personal motivations that have influenced them - including a failed love, a sense of personal revenge, the frustration of living under Israeli occupation, and envy for the prosperous Israeli lifestyle. In addition, Sari Nusseibeh, president of Al-Quds University, speaks with anchor Mishal Husain"--Container

4 editions published in 2013 in Dutch and English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

X91;My conscience compels me to commemorate here with deep sadness and bitter disappointment the discharging from their positions of some of my Dutch colleagues, solely because of their ancestry or religious beliefs.'0With these words, Utrecht scientist Professor Victor Koningsberger started his public lecture on 25 November 1940, thus becoming the first professor in the Netherlands to publicly stand up for the Jewish colleagues who were discharged from the university by the German occupiers. 0In their honour, Utrecht University has initiated the annual Koningsberger Lecture. In this way, the university wishes to keep alive Koningsberger’s principled act of defiance against the German occupiers as an example of the possible need for such acts to permanently guarantee fundamental rights for present and future generations. At the centre of this notion is the importance of core human rights, such as the right to equality regardless of race or religion, as well as of the constitutional state and the principles of democracy. Each year the Koningsberger Lecture is given by someone who made his or her mark on this field
