The purpose of this presentation is to describe and demonstrate the Apgar system in the evaluation of the newborn infant. This objective is achieved with the use of a chart and the demonstration of the assessment of an infant one minute after birth. The value of this assessment in predicting survival and neuromuscular deficit is also discussed. While the anesthesiologist or pediatrician should ideally evaluate the infant Dr. Apgar states that the circulating nurse is a good candidate in a small hospital. According to this presentation five elements are selected for evaluation. These include the heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, reflexes and color. Each of these five elements has a possible score of 0, 1 or 2; giving a possible total score of 10. The time for the evaluation is at 60 seconds after birth. Methods of palpating the heart rate in the cord, epigastrium and over the heart are demonstrated and methods used to stimulate the reflexes are also demonstrated
