Indiqué sur la jaquette : Portrait d'une femme d'exception, ce film retrace, en sa compagnie, la longue carrière de Jenny Alpha (1910-2010). Cette artiste martiniquaise a consacré sa vie à faire reconnaître la culture créole et à ouvrir le théâtre français aux comédiens noirs. Elle raconte ici son parcours d'auteur-interprète à comédienne, ses rencontres avec les surréalistes et les intellectuels défenseurs de la négritude, et son combat pour obtenir des rôles au théâtre. Arrivée en 1929 à Paris, Jenny rêve de théâtre mais se confronte au racisme. "Vous ne pouvez pas jouer Racine" lui dit-on. A une époque colonialiste qui s'amuse avec Joséphine Baker, elle s'affirme en créole, reprenant d'anciens chants de travailleurs africains. "Elle a donné ses lettres de noblesse à la musique de la femme antillaise" et s'est battue pour "faire émerger toutes les souffrances d'une société que l'on connaissait d'une manière coloniale et folklorique" (Alex Uri, musicologue). Un combat salué par Aimé Césaire, son ami : "Elle est toujours restée fidèle à son peuple, à ses origines." A 55 ans, elle perce enfin au théâtre dans "La Tragédie du roi Christophe". Elle va enchaîner les rôles (Shakespeare, Brecht, Sophocle, Tchekhov) jusqu'à la fin de sa vie - on la voit ici en répétition d'un texte de Duras. Elle marque le paysage théâtral français dans "Folie ordinaire d'une fille de Cham" de Julius Amédé Laou, mis en scène par Daniel Mesguich (et film de Jean Rouch en 1986)
