Morality and political violence by C. A. J Coady( Book )

17 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Political violence in the form of wars, insurgencies, terrorism, and violent rebellion constitutes a major human challenge today as it has so often in the past. It is a challenge not only to life and limb, but also to morality itself. In this book, C.A.J. Coady brings a philosophical and ethical perspective to the subject. He places the problems of war and political violence in the frame of reflective ethics. In clear and accessible language, Coady reexamines a range of urgent problems pertinent to political violence against the background of a contemporary approach to just war thinking. The problems examined include the right to make war, the right way to conduct war, terrorism, revolution, humanitarianism, mercenary warriors, conscientious objection, combatant and noncombatant status, the ideal of peace and the right way to end war, pacifism, weapons of mass destruction, and supreme emergency exemptions from just war prohibition. Coady attempts to vindicate the relevance of the just war tradition to conternporary problems without applying the tradition in a merely mechanical or uncritical fashion."--Jacket

What's wrong with moralism? by C. A. J Coady( Book )

8 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Appeals to morality are back on the agenda in international and national politics. The moral high ground is invoked to justify war, in discussions about waging "war" on poverty, and in many other political and social contexts. Despite this, terms such as "moralism", "moralising" and "moralistic" are increasingly used as pejorative terms. This book examines exactly what people mean when they accuse others of being "moralistic"."--Jacket

The ethics of human enhancement : understanding the debate by Steve Clarke( Book )

6 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We humans can enhance some of our mental and physical abilities above the normal upper limits for our species with the use of particular drug therapies and medical procedures. We will be able to enhance many more of our abilities in more ways in the near future. Some commentators have welcomed the prospect of wide use of human enhancement technologies, while others have viewed it with alarm, and have made clear that they find human enhancement morally objectionable. 'The Ethics of Human Enhancement' examines whether the reactions can be supported by articulated philosophical reasoning, or perhaps explained in terms of psychological influences on moral reasoning. An international team of ethicists refresh the debate with new ideas and arguments, making connections with scientific research and with related issues in moral philosophy

Messy morality : the challenge of politics by C. A. J Coady( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tony Coady explores the challenges that morality poses to politics. He confronts the complex intellectual tradition known as realism, which seems to deny any relevance of morality to politics, especially international politics. He argues that, although realism has many serious faults, it has lessons to teach us: in particular, it cautions us against the dangers of moralism in thinking about politics and particularly foreign affairs. Morality must not be confused with moralism: Coady characterizes various forms of moralism and sketches their distorting influence on a realistic political morality. He seeks to restore the concept of ideals to an important place in philosophical discussion, and to give it a particular pertinence in the discussion of politics. He deals with the fashionable idea of 'dirty hands', according to which good politics will necessarily involve some degree of moral taint or corruption. Finally, he examines the controversial issue of the role of lying and deception in politics. Along the way Coady offers illuminating discussion of historical and current political controversies. This lucid book will provoke and stimulate anyone interested in the interface of morality and politics
