John Rogers (1829-1904) is arguably the most popular American sculptor ever, selling over 80,000 small plasters, known as 'Rogers Groups' over the course of a career that spanned the late nineteenth century. Rogers himself said, 'I want each group to tell a story', and these narrative sculptures carried on a deeply rooted popular American genre tradition that was established in the antebellum period by painters such as William Sidney Mount and George Caleb Bingham. The book, illustrated and containing eleven essays on different aspects of his work (including its Neoclassical elements influences and the mass market it found), aims to bring Rogers' work to life for a new generation of admirers

Small statue of three figures on a large rounded platform base, roughly "D" shaped, with one flat side toward back of base. Man [President Lincoln] is seated in chair with legs slightly crossed at ankles, examining an unrolled map or document. Another map or document rests curled beneath the chair. To Lincoln's right stands uniformed man [Gen. Ulysses S. Grant], pointing to the map with the right hand while the left hand rests on the chair back. Grant is looking toward another bearded man [Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton], who flanks the President's left side. Stanton stands with handkerchief in hand, looking down towards the map. Impressed around the front of the rounded base pedestal, in plain block lettering: "THE COUNCIL OF WAR". The artist's stamp, impressed on top surface of base, reads: "JOHN ROGERS; NEW YORK". Another mark impressed behind Grant's left foot reads: "PATENTED; MARCH 31, 1868."
