Three seperate stories set and shot in Rome, Paris and London portraying juvenile delinquents in post-war Europe and suggesting something of the aimlessness and moral confusion of this generation. French and English censors banned the part of the film dealing with their respective country, while the Rome episode displeased the Italians by depicting their youngsters as neo-Facists and had to be modified to gain financing. In the French episode a group of high school students kill one of their colleagues for his money. In the Italian episode a university student is involved in smuggling cigarettes. In the English episode a lazy poet finds the body of a woman on the downs, and tries to sell his story to the press

In order to get rid of his troublesome son François, Maître Gérane manages to have him committed to a mental hospital owned by Dr. Varmont, a supporter of traditional treatments, in constant conflict with Dr. Emery, whose therapy takes the psychology of patients into account. François soon makes friends with Heurtevent, a sweet epileptic, and both decide to escape from the place. Their attempt is a failure and Heurtevent, unable to get over what he considers a return to hell, commits suicide. But rebellious François tries again and this time around he is successful. He finds shelter at his friend Stephanie's home

Vincent Cabral, a violinist and occasional jewel thief, returns to France hoping to renew his acquaintance with his younger brother Virgile, whom he has not seen for three years. Vincent's return coincides with a spate of terrorist attacks which target the bourgeoisie, mostly wealthy businessmen. The police investigating the attacks soon discover that they are the work of anarchist students who are hell-bent on overthrowing the capitalist system. When Vincent discovers that his own brother is leading the terrorist group, he tries to find him.
