Marius-Ary Leblond est un pseudonyme emprunté par deux célèbres écrivains réunionnais Georges Athénas (1877-1953) né à Saint-Denis et Aimé Merlo (1880-1958) né à Saint-Pierre. Leurs nombreux romans " s'inscrivent dans l'idéologie du roman colonial ". Ce roman retrace l'histoire d'Alexis recueilli par deux de ses tantes à la mort de ses parents. Au cours de ses études, il côtoie tour à tour des enfants de notables et des enfants noirs. Alexis reste en lien avec sa " nénaine " de couleur Aglaé mais convaincu qu'il a le devoir de préserver sa race, il renonce à l'amour qu'il éprouve pour Nello, mulâtresse. Le jeune homme découvre l'âme soeur en Célina, fille d'un paysan normand
