Mark Rothko : the works on canvas : catalogue raisonné by Mark Rothko( Book )

22 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in English and held by 773 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the first volume of the definitive catalogue raisonné of the work of Mark Rothko, one of the greatest abstract artists of the twentieth century. It documents Rothko's entire output of paintings on canvas and panel, reproducing all the extant works in color. An introductory text also investigates every essential feature of Rothko's art. David Anfam explores the underestimated variety as well as the amazing continuity of Rothko's pictures. These include the images for which Rothko is famous - the large, hypnotic, and poignant fields of color - along with almost 400 further pictures that reveal a far less well known yet fascinating figure who was attuned by turns to realism, expressionism, surrealism, and the avant-garde issues of his era."--

Mark Rothko : the decisive decade, 1940-1950 by Mark Rothko( Book )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first publication dedicated exclusively to Mark Rothko's art during the critical formative period of the 1940s. Examining the development and artistic exploration of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, this unprecedented volume presents the works of American artist Mark Rothko from the 1940s, a time when his most essential development as a painter occurred, dramatically and in a very compact space of time. During this period, Rothko moved from expressive figurative and surrealist canvases to more abstract multiform subjects and finally to his signature abstractions--luminous rectangles of color suspended in space. Richly illustrated with works by Rothko and his contemporaries, and with essays by prominent Rothko scholars, this important new book deepens our understanding of Rothko's art during this vital period, and that of the mature works that emerged from it."--Publisher's website

Abstract expressionism by David Anfam( Book )

8 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Abstract expressionism is the most important art movement since the Second World War. Because the images created by such leading figures as Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko were so extraordinary, it is often thought to have been a revolution in painting only, but its radical spirit extended further, encompassing the sculpture of David Smith and Aaron Siskind's photography. Along with other key figures such as Barnett Newman and Franz Kline, this group formed a nucleus united not just against the tensions of American society from the 1930s onward, but also in their aim to forge diverse new visual languages. David Anfam explores the movement in terms of its political implications and rich cultural contexts, bringing many fresh insights to the works themselves. Taking into account a wealth of scholarship, this new edition also has nearly one hundred works reproduced in color"--Back cover

Dorothea Rockburne : in my mind's eye by Alicia Grant Longwell( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born and raised in Montreal, Rockburne first studied at the city's École des Beaux-Arts with Paris-trained painters Paul-Émile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle. Beginning in 1950, she attended the legendary Black Mountain College in Asheville, North Carolina, where classes with Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and, perhaps most significantly, the mathematician Max Dehn, had a seminal influence on her work. With fellow students Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and John Chamberlain, she thrived in the unique cross-disciplinary curriculum at Black Mountain and brought this sense of exchange and collaboration when she moved to New York, working in dance and performance in renowned early pieces with Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, and Carolee Schneemann, among many others. Rockburne's work, with the use of materials such as cardboard, sheet metal, and crude oil, began to gain wide attention in New York in the 1960s; in 1971 she had her first solo exhibition at the famed Bykert Gallery. From this early minimalist vocabulary, Rockburne has expanded the discourse to include investigations of, among other themes, the Golden Section, the solar system, and the writings of Pascal, all seamlessly joined in an ongoing synthesis of rigorous intellect and ardent pursuit. This first career retrospective will be accompanied by a 160-page catalogue with 52 full-color illustrations, published by the Museum and distributed by ARTBOOK -- D.A.P. Essayists include the curator, Alicia Longwell, who will provide an overview of the artist's profound engagement with the history of art. Three additional contributors will investigate salient aspects of Rockburne's career: Stéphane Aquin, Curator of Contemporary Art, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, will write about Rockburne's early years in Montreal and the cultural and artistic climate that shaped her future development as an artist; art historian David Anfam will examine Rockburne's work within the context of art world movements and strategies of the 1960s, 70s and 80s; and Robert Lawlor, author of Scared Geometry: Philosophy & Practice, will probe the artist's lifelong engagement with ancient knowledge. The catalogue will also include a selected chronology of life and work with artist's statements."--Publisher's website
