Exhibitions and the development of modern planning culture by ROBERT FREESTONE( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The evolution of city planning theory and practice in the first half of the twentieth century was captured and driven by a range of exhibitionary practices in a variety of settings globally, from international expos to local public halls. The agendas of the promoters varied, but exhibitions generally drew their social legitimacy from their status as "appropriate educative agencies of citizenship". Bringing together a range of international case studies, this volume explores the highly visual genre of public planning exhibitions worldwide. In doing so, it provides a unique lens on the development of modern urban planning and design from the late19th century to the present day. Focussing mainly on the first half of the 20th century, it looks in particular at historic exhibitions which sought to transform urban society's understanding of the possibilities of planning as a force for social betterment. The visuality of presentation, contemporary reactions, and outcomes for the planning profession and the community are explored to make for a unique, innovative and attractive approach to the history of planning ideas. The five major themes are the visual representation of ideas and ideologies; institutions and individuals involved; the broader context of display; and the impacts and implications for the development planning culture. With contributors including Karl Fischer, John Gold, Carola Hein, Peter Larkham, Javier Monclus, and Mark Tewdwr-Jones, the dominant intellectual paradigm further unifying the collection is planning history
The planning imagination : Peter Hall and the study of urban and regional planning by Mark Tewdwr-Jones( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Peter Hall's contribution to research and development, and the deeper thinking about the future of cities and regions, is recognized worldwide. I had already read some of Peter's work by the time Geoffrey Howe asked him to advise us on the Enterprise Zone idea in 1979. I incorporated the concept of Enterprise Zones into our first planning legislation which also saw the birth of Urban Development Corporations. This combination of ideas was responsible for the remarkable transformation of six thousand acres of East London. Peter's role in all this should be very clearly recognized.

Place and placelessness revisited by Robert Freestone( Book )

6 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since its publication in 1976, Ted Relph's "Place and Placelessness" has been an influential text in thinking about cities and city life across disciplines, including human geography, sociology, architecture, planning, and urban design. For four decades, ideas put forward by this seminal work have continued to spark debates, from the concept of placelessness itself through how it plays out in our societies to how city designers might respond to its challenge in practice. Drawing on evidence from Australian, British, Japanese, and North and South American urban settings, "Place and Placelessness Revisited" is a collection of cutting edge empirical research and theoretical discussions of contemporary applications and interpretations of place and placelessness. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach, including contributions from across the breadth of disciplines in the built environment - architecture, environmental psychology, geography, landscape architecture, planning, sociology, and urban design - in critically re-visiting placelessness in theory and its relevance for twenty-first century contexts
