The radioactive boy scout : the frightening true story of a whiz kid and his homemade nuclear reactor by Ken Silverstein ( Book )
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 549 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Growing up in suburban Detroit, David Hahn was fascinated by science, and his basement experiments were far more ambitious than those of other boys. While working on his Atomic Energy merit badge for the Boy Scouts, David's obsessive attention turned to nuclear energy. Throwing caution to the wind, he plunged into a new project: building a model nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard garden shed. Ken Silverstein re-creates in brilliant detail the months of David's improbable nuclear quest. His unsanctioned and wholly unsupervised project finally sparked an environmental catastrophe that put his town's forty thousand residents at risk and caused the EPA to shut down his lab and bury it at a radioactive dumpsite in Utah
Private warriors by Ken Silverstein ( Book )
9 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 409 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Private Warriors moves from an arms dealer's estate in Vienna to a weapons show in Rio de Janeiro to a Soldier of Fortune convention in Las Vegas. It introduces little known figures such as Ernst Werner Glatt, a right-wing German who for many years was the Pentagon's preferred gunrunner, and Andrew Marshall, a long-time Pentagon hand who promotes the development of needless new weapons systems. Others encountered have more recognizable names, such as General Alexander Haig, the former Secretary of State who now lobbies for China and helps sell weapons to Turkey, and Frank Gaffney, an ex-Pentagon official who has grown rich by promoting the biggest boondoggle of them all, Star Wars. Today's private warriors have one thing in common: a financial interet in war, and the connections to push for a continuation of Cold War military policy."--BOOK JACKET

Washington Babylon by Alexander Cockburn ( Book )
6 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Washington Babylon describes in shocking detail the corruption of the political establishment, Republicans and Democrats alike. Journey through Babylon's darkest regions, and you will learn how Babylon's millionaire journalists connived to deny money to disabled children; how House Speaker Newt Gingrich really spells F-A-M-I-L-Y V-A-L-U-E-S, and how he spent his student days at Tulane campaigning for sex photos in a student newspaper; how Commerce Secretary Ron Brown lobbied for Haitian monster "Baby Doc" Duvalier and Guatemalan torturers; how the co-director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory searched for Atlantis, tried to train dolphins in ESP, suspected aliens were impregnating earth women; how Big Oil's tax-exempt foundations bought up the green elite while reaping millions from rape-and-pillage investments; how 80,000 lobbyists have bought out Babylon; and how Bill and Hillary Clinton struck a devil's pact with Big Money nearly twenty years ago

7 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"An intellectual of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and a US-based journalist produce a sympathetic portrait of the Party. Without being critical offers history and context of PT's phenomenal growth in 1980s. Title is an awkward translation of Lula's 1989 campaign slogan"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57

The radioactive boyscout by Ken Silverstein ( Book )
4 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
David Hahn, a boy scout, wanted to earn his science merit badge. He could have done an experiment with bicarbonate of soda, like most other kids. But he didn't. He built a nuclear reactor in his shed instead.David Hahn's gospel was The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments. While his friends were learning to play baseball or dreaming of owning their first car, David was in the middle of an increasingly hazardous trail of chemical experiments. Moving on from routine explosions that forced his work from his bedroom to the garden shed, David quickly determined to build a nuclear reactor. For this he had to make a neutron gun, dupe officials at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to provide him with information and imitate a professor of nuclear physics in order to obtain purified radioactive elements, all of which he did.David, sporting a gas mask for protection, took to the potting shed with his ever more unstable and dangerous load. His diligence and ultimate success triggered the Federal Radiological Emergency Response Plan: a team of men in moon suits who deconstructed the shed and loaded it and all its contents into steel drums emblazoned with radioactive warning signs. This is a true story. Through it, man's innocent obsession and fatal engagement with nuclear reactivity is told with surreal wonder

The secret world of oil by Ken Silverstein ( Book )
2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The oil industry provides the lifeblood of modern civilization, and bestselling books have been written about the industry and even individual companies in it, like ExxonMobil. But the modern oil industry is an amazingly shady meeting ground of fixers, gangsters, dictators, competing governments, and multinational corporations, and until now, no book has set out to tell the story of this largely hidden world. The global fleet of some 11,000 tankers--that's tripled during the past decade--moves approximately 2 billion metric tons of oil annually. And every stage of the route, from discovery to consumption, is tainted by corruption and violence, even if little of that is visible to the public. Based on trips to New York, Washington, Houston, London, Paris, Geneva, Phnom Penh, Dakar, Lagos, Baku, and Moscow, among other far-flung locals, The Secret World of Oil includes up-close portraits of a shadowy Baku-based trader; a high-flying London fixer; and an oil dictator's playboy son who has to choose one of his eleven luxury vehicles when he heads out to party in Los Angeles. Supported by funding from the prestigious Open Society, this is both an entertaining global travelogue and a major work of investigative reporting"--
