Visualization in mathematics, reading and science education by Linda M Phillips( Book )

17 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Visualizations - either self-created or external visual stimuli used as an aid to learning - are probably as old as learning itself. Yet surprisingly little research has been done either into how precisely they help us learn, or how to produce ones that are effective pedagogical tools. This volume, a comprehensive review of theory and research on the use of visualization in mathematics, science and reading, contrasts the two dominant theoretical paradigms of how people construct and interpret visualizations. However, the authors never lose sight of practical applications, providing frequent, accessible synopses of research findings in addition to succinct summaries of how the research affects practice. Written by a team with decades of experience in research and practice in the three subjects, the chapters show how cognitive psychology can enhance practical pedagogy, place visualizations in their proper historical context, and analyze in detail the effectiveness of paper-, computer- and video-based visualizations, with some surprising results. The book is published at a time when, it seems, there is no limit to the art of creating visualizations, as powerful computers make graphics ever more colorful and realistic and 'interactivity' is firmly established as a buzzword in the educational lexicon. The aim of the volume is to explore some central questions in the field, including how to evaluate visualizations and whether or not they can act as an aid to reading development, and to mathematics and science learning. The authors also point to potentially fruitful subjects for future research, and offer their own conclusions and recommendations. As the debate continues over the value of visualizations, with polarized arguments on the one hand lauding them and on the other dismissing them as gimmicks, this book introduces a voice of reason to the discussion that will be welcomed by psychologists and educationalists alike
Reading for evidence and interpreting visualizations in mathematics and science education by Stephen P Norris( Book )

CRYSTAL{u2014}Alberta was established to research ways to improve students{u2019} understanding and reasoning in science and mathematics. To accomplish this goal, faculty members in Education, Science, and Engineering, as well as school teachers joined forces to produce a resource bank of innovative and tested instructional materials that are transforming teaching in the K-12 classroom. Many of the instructional materials cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and explore contemporary topics such as global climate change and the spread of the West Nile virus. Combined with an emphasis on the use of visualizations, the instructional materials improve students{u2019} engagement with science and mathematics. Participation in the CRYSTAL{u2014}Alberta project has changed the way I think about the connection between what I do as a researcher and what I do as a teacher: I have learned how to better translate scientific knowledge into language and activities appropriate for students, thereby transforming my own teaching. I also have learned to make better connections between what students are learning and what is happening in their lives and the world, thereby increasing students{u2019} interest in the subject and enriching their learning experience

Ask me no questions : a project evaluation by Canada( Book )

4 editions published between 1991 and 1996 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ask me no questions is the name of a novel about a 15-year old woman whose father had sexually abused her between the ages of 3 and 13. The novel relates how the woman deals with the revelation that her father was also abusing her 13-year-old sister and with her own abuse, which she had been hiding. The authors of the novel intended it to educate young people on the nature of sexual abuse and the role of law as protector. This report presents the findings of a study designed to assess the extent to which the novel is effective in achieving its purpose, and to provide some guidance to others who may be interested in using the novel as an approach to educate young people about the law and the justice system. The study gathered, compiled, and interpreted five types of evaluative information about the novel, including the degree of change in high school students' attitudes and knowledge of sexual abuse and the role of law in dealing with abuse

Adapted Primary Literature The Use of Authentic Scientific Texts in Secondary Schools by Anat Yarden( Book )

8 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book specifies the foundation for Adapted Primary Literature (APL), a novel text genre that enables the learning and teaching of science using research articles that were adapted to the knowledge level of high-school students. More than 50 years ago, J.J. Schwab suggested that Primary Scientific Articles "afford the most authentic, unretouched specimens of enquiry that we can obtain" and raised for the first time the idea that such articles can be used for "enquiry into enquiry". This book, the first to be published on this topic, presents the realization of this vision and shows how the reading and writing of scientific articles can be used for inquiry learning and teaching. It provides the origins and theory of APL and examines the concept and its importance. It outlines a detailed description of creating and using APL, and provides examples for the use of the enactment of APL in classes, as well as descriptions of possible future prospects for the implementation of APL. Altogether, the book lays the foundations for the use of this authentic text genre for the learning and teaching of science in secondary schools

The Effects of Demography and Values on Literacy Attainment : and the Effects of Literacy Attainment on Literacy Practices, Economic Benefits, and Perceptions of Quality of Life. Report Number 2. Summary Reports of Paths to Literacy and Illiteracy in Newfoundland and Labrador by Stephen P Norris( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To account for the fact that the average reading literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada) is lower than the national average, a study examined the value that individuals place on literacy. Subjects, 625 males and females, each of whom was a head or one of the heads of households between 21 and 65 years of age and had not participated in an earlier study identifying the discrepancy, were administered a 59-item questionnaire and a literacy skills measure (the Survey of Literacy Skills Used in Daily Activities). Results indicated that: (1) demographic factors influenced in a variety of ways the value that individuals placed on literacy; (2) the value placed on literacy (such that it motivated subjects to action--to want more education, to be dissatisfied with the educational system in their community) was related to increased literacy levels; (3) literacy attainment did not lead to perception of a higher quality of life and to greater participation in the labor force; and (4) literacy attainment led to greater participation in literacy activities, but hardly more than some other factors like age and community of residence. Findings suggest that literacy develops better when it is valued, but not just any kind of valuing will do. (Three tables of data and a figure representing a model of literacy attainment, outcomes, and activities are included.) (RS)
