In December 1989, a popular rebellion in Romania overthrew the government and executed dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife Elena. After word of demonstrations in the city of Timișoara reached Bucharest-via the VOA and Radio Free Europe, demonstrators in Bucharest determined that television and video would play an important part in the success of the developing revolution, and occupied the studios of Televisiunea Romănâ, broadcasting continuously for 120 hours. Using footage taken by amateur videographers, network camera operators, and the broadcasts demonstrators aired as the revolution unfolded, the filmmakers present a chronology of those events as captured, aired, and seen by the participants themselves

"Ephemeral and monumental, the work of Cai Guo-Qiang is founded upon an ancient religious and philosophical aesthetic tradition. Borrowing elements from Chinese culture, the artist also makes reference to Western art in the wake of Joseph Beuys, Yves Klein, and the Arte Povera artists." "Seeking a working method that would bring him 'a feeling of freedom', Cai Guo-Qiang experimented with various materials, and in 1989 he unveiled a series of drawings rendered in gunpowder, a substance first discovered by Chinese alchemists in search of the elixir of life for the Emperor and yet used subsequently to kill. These drawings, entitled Projects for Extraterrestrials, are among the works published in this book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. Also included are the artist's preparatory sketchbooks and gigantic screens, presented here for the first time."--Jacket

"What a television critic has always wished to see and never got to see : the continual flow of images just occasionally being stopped, so as to examine them more closely, to discuss them, to analyze them, look at them again; to see through the images to the reality of which they tell. Kamera und Wirklichkeit, Rumänien 1989 is the title of a three-hour documentary by Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica. Farocki and Ujica assembled material from over 120 live broadcasts by Rumanian television from the days of revolution in December 1989 as well as a similar amount of amateur video and material shot by cinematographers from Rumanian state film studios, so as to produce a chronicle of events, subdivided into chapters and captioned. The media theorists brought together to discuss the sequences in the studio (Friedrich Kittler, Bochum; Andrei Plesu, Bukarest; Manfred Schneider, Essen; Peter M. Spangenberg, Mannheim) do so in detail, thoroughly and on occasion with the concentrated vanity of the professionally far-sighted. "
