Barcelona by Whit Stillman( Visual )

In Barcelona, Spain during the last decade of the Cold War, Ted Boynton, the Spanish representative for a Chicago electric engine firm, plays host to his cousin, Fred Boynton, a lieutenant in the Navy. Ted is earnest and ambitious, but not a typical American salesman. Fred is an advance man for the Sixth Fleet's upcoming shore leave. They are smart but somewhat naive white-collar workers, who wear suits, are very serious about themselves, and who always try to sound impressive--in a senior seminar manner. The film questions the adequacy of overly civilized behavior in tough, real-world situations, the values that inform it, and the struggle to determine what those values are. In the end, this is a portrait of two capable, earnest young men destined for an imminent move into the ill-defined purgatory of middle management

Love & friendship : in which Jane Austen's Lady Susan Vernon is entirely vindicated by Whit Stillman( )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jane Austen's funniest novel is also her least known--until now. Impossibly beautiful, disarmingly witty, and completely self-absorbed: Meet Lady Susan Vernon, both the heart and the thorn of Love & Friendship. Recently widowed, with a daughter who's coming of age as quickly as their funds are dwindling, Lady Susan makes it her mission to find them wealthy husbands--and fast. But when her attempts to secure their futures result only in the wrath of a prominent conquest's wife and the title of "most accomplished coquette in England," Lady Susan must rethink her strategy. Unannounced, she arrives at her brother-in-law's country estate. Here she intends to take refuge--in no less than luxury, of course--from the colorful rumors trailing her, while finding another avenue to "I do." Before the scandalizing gossip can run its course, though, romantic triangles ensue. With a pitch-perfect Austenian sensibility and wry social commentary, filmmaker and writer Whit Stillman cleverly reimagines and completes one of our greatest writers' unfinished works. As much homage to its muse's perennial influence as testament to its author's brilliance, Love & Friendship is a sharp comedy of manners, and a fiendishly funny treat for Austen and Stillman fans alike

A Whit Stillman trilogy( Visual )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the course of the 1990s, writer-director Whit Stillman made a trilogy of films about the acid tongues and broken hearts of some haplessly erudite young Americans in New York and abroad. Set in the eighties, these films trace the arc of that decade, led by Stillman's Oscar-nominated debut, Metropolitan, which introduced moviegoers to a strange, endangered species of privileged New Yorker, the "urban haute bourgeoisie." Chronologically, the tale continues with The Last Days of Disco, in which, with an earnest wink, Stillman mourns the close of New York's nightclub era via the story of two young party-going women juggling day jobs in book publishing. Finally, Barcelona plunks down a pair of love-starved upper-class men in a foreign city rife with anti-American sentiment. At once effervescent and melancholy, these are comedies about the ends of cultural moments, social change as seen through the eyes of reluctant, unflaggingly sardonic romantics. --dvdempire.com
