Circadian rhythms by Michael W Young( Book )

31 editions published between 2005 and 2018 in English and held by 627 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our daily routines and physiological functions-and those of virtually all living organisms-are synchronized with the Earth's rotation about its axis. These include sleep patterns, hormone secretion, blood pressure, body temperature, and feeding behavior. Oscillations in these processes, or circadian rhythms, are controlled by molecular feedback loops that integrate with environmental and metabolic stimuli. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Biology examines the molecular and cellular details of the oscillatory machinery and how they control aspects of our physiology. Contributors discuss the cell-autonomous generation of circadian time and how those mechanisms interact with circuit-level mechanisms in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Links between circadian and redox systems, as well as the relationship between circadian oscillations and pathogenic infections, are also covered. In addition, the authors examine circadian rhythms in other species (e.g., plants and Drosophila) and how they enable the organisms to adapt to their environments. This volume will therefore serve as a valuable reference for not only neurobiologists and cell and molecular biologists, but all who wish to understand the clocks and rhythms of life

A good death : conversations with East Londoners by Michael Dunlop Young( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Good Death is based on work in East London and provides a wide range of fascinating and helpful insights into all aspects of experiencing death and surviving grief. The voices in the book are mostly those of people who have managed to cope despite being under the shadow of impending death. Their experience could be a comfort to anybody in a similar situation. A Good Death is intended for people who are dying, for their lay and professional carers and for student doctors, nurses and social workers

2013 The Shaw Prize : the ancient clock( Visual )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"The Shaw Prize is in 3 categories: astronomy, life science & medicine and mathematical sciences. For the next three weeks. The Pearl Report will a series on this award. In the first of 3 episodes, we meet 3 American geneticists sharing the 2013 life science & medicine prize. Their discoveries opened up research into why we wake up and fall asleep; what molecular mechanisms underly our circadian rhythms. There are many genes involved in regulating our day/night rhythms. All over our bodies, there are clocks. And they're ticking!"--TVB web site
