Manuscript on paper in a scribal hand of an English translation of Sir William Herbert's "Croftus, sive de Hibernia Liber" (ca. 1590), with alterations in the marginal notes and concluding address to refer to James I rather than Queen Elizabeth. The text contains Herbert's blueprint for the successful colonization and pacification of Ireland, including the suppression of "faction" and of "lewd and setitious poets which they call Rhymers;" the translation of the Scriptures and the Anglican liturgy into Irish; and the establishment of Irish universities. He also calls for "those addicted to Irish customes and habitts" to be "reduced to civilitee;" and warns against the possible "degeneratinge of a Colonye" there
