Day Trip est certainement l'un des meilleurs albums de Metheny, sans les excès de fusion qui ont pu lasser à la longue. Sur cet album, enregistré à New York en 2005, avec le contrebassiste Christian McBride et le batteur Antonio Sanchez, Metheny démontre qu'il est encore un remarquable mélodiste. Bien que les dix morceaux soient des compositions originales de Metheny, on aura peine à y reconnaitre son style, sauf sur une ou deux pièces, tout au plus. En général, le jeu de Metheny semble plus léger, moins appuyé. Is This America? (Katrina 2005), où Metheny joue de la guitare acoustique avec bonheur, fait bien entendu référence à la déconvenue du système fédéral américain suite à la catastrophe de Katrina. Calvin's Keys, une pièce aux accents blues, finement décorée par Metheny, est un des morceaux clés de l'album. Metheny signe ici, avec Day Trip, son meilleur album des dix dernières années.
